The Congressional Accountability Act applies certain rights and protections of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to covered employees. FLSA rights and protections require payment of the minimum wage and overtime compensation to nonexempt employees and prohibit sex discrimination in wages paid to men and women. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) went into effect on August 5, 1993. The Congressional Accountability Act applies provisions of the FMLA to covered employees in the legislative branch. It entitles eligible employees to take leave for certain family and medical reasons and to be reinstated to their prior positions upon their return to work.
