Since 1981, October has been commemorated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month; domestic violence is one of the top reported destructive behaviors in the US Navy. We all deserve safe and healthy relationships; and while no relationship is perfect, all partners can learn to build mutually supportive, healthier relationships through help and support: 🔸 We encourage those who find themselves feeling at odds with their partner to the point where they feel scared, forced, or helpless to seek support. 🔸 We also encourage those who realize their own behavior is or has become destructive, harmful or forceful and want to improve their relationship to similarly seek help. A few weeks ago, I concluded my incredible first ever cruise experience as a participant in the NSF funded STEM Student Experiences Aboard Ships (STEMSEAS) program aboard the R/V Sally Ride during transit from Newport, OR to San Diego, CA! As an undergraduate who has always been interested in oceanographic field campaigns, marine operations, and the logistics behind observational oceanography, this experience has been life changing! This opportunity further motivated me to pursue shipboard opportunities both as a student and for my career. I’d like to thank Sharon Katz Cooper and all the amazing program staff behind STEMSEAS that work very hard to ensure these opportunities for students. I would also like to thank my amazing STEMSEAS mentors Noreen Meghani, Waverly Ray , and Joseph Ruggiero. In addition, I have great gratitude for the crew and research technicians who made us feel welcome aboard the Sally Ride! Finally I’d like to acknowledge all of the organizations who provided their resources to make this experience possible including Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory , National Science Foundation (NSF) , UNOLS , Office of Naval Research , and Scripps Institution of Oceanography First 📸 courtesy of Stefani Martynenko (UNOLS) #STEMSEAS #NSFfunded
