U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Scientific Development Squadron ONE (VXS) 1 takes to the skies to deploy observational buoys in front of Hurricane Milton’s projected path on Wednesday, Oct. 9 providing real-time forecasts to the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) Hurricane Coastal Impacts (NHCI) team for timely prediction and operational readiness. “Three gulf hurricanes in four weeks is unprecedented for our nation and VXS-1. The Warlocks understand the importance of the coastal impacts mission and these short notice flights are a huge priority for us,” said Scientific Development Squadron ONE (VXS) 1 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Aaron Roberts. “I am truly amazed by my Sailors teamwork and pride and at the same time my heart breaks for all the local communities impacted during the 2024 hurricane season.” The team dropped 26 buoys during the 7.8 hour flight, which spanned roughly 225 nautical miles of the Gulf from north to south. The aircrew is comprised of Commanding Officer Cmdr. Aaron Roberts, Cmdr. Andrew Vawter, Lt. Benjamin Cumberland, Lt. Brandon Bui, Lt. Sean Carpenter, First Class Petty Officer (AWF1) Rachel Mcleod, AWF1 Gavin Naughton, and AWF2 Cody Buckingham. https://lnkd.in/eqSQnwRk #vxs1 #warlocks #nrl #hurricane #hurricanemilton #climate #meteorology #lab #innovate #usnavy #resilience #revolutionize #gulf #florida

MBARI researchers—working alongside a team of international collaborators from the Korea Polar Research Institute, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory—have discovered large underwater ice formations at the edge of the Canadian Beaufort Sea, located in a remote region of the Arctic. In a previous MBARI study, researchers observed enormous craters on the seafloor in this area, attributed to the thawing of ancient permafrost submerged underwater. While exploring the flanks of these craters on a subsequent expedition, MBARI researchers and an international team of collaborators observed exposed layers of submarine permafrost ice. The complex morphology of the seafloor in this region of the Arctic tells a story that involves both the melting of ancient permafrost that was submerged beneath the sea long ago and the disfiguration of the modern seafloor that occurs when released water refreezes. NRL Instrument Sheds New Light on Thunderstorms ⛈️ The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) in-Situ Thunderstorm Observer for Radiation Mechanisms (iSTORM) has made groundbreaking discoveries about thunderstorms. By measuring gamma-ray emissions, iSTORM has provided new insights into the electric field conditions within thunderstorms, helping to improve our understanding of lightning initiation. These findings were published in Nature after a successful campaign in 2023, where iSTORM was deployed on a NASA ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. The data collected by iSTORM has challenged previous assumptions about thunderstorm electrification and revealed new phenomena, such as flickering gamma-ray flashes. NRL's iSTORM is a cutting-edge instrument that has played a crucial role in advancing our knowledge of thunderstorms. This research has important implications for understanding and predicting severe weather events. The U.S. Navy has revolutionized military equipment maintenance with the development of the Portable Fluid Analyzer Plus (PFA+). This innovative tool can quickly and accurately assess the health of vehicles, aircraft, and other equipment by analyzing lubricants and fuel. By identifying potential problems early, PFA+ helps prevent breakdowns and ensures the readiness of military forces. This is especially critical for forward-deployed and expeditionary units operating in challenging environments. The development of PFA+ was a collaborative effort between the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Naval Sea Systems Command, and AMETEK Spectro Scientific. This partnership leveraged expertise from various fields to create a truly innovative solution for military maintenance. #TechTuesday 2005 - Visual-Spatial Perspective Taking An important aspect of human - human interaction is visual-spatial perspective-taking, in which one participant is able to interpret a scene from the other's point of view. NRL developed a computational cognitive process model for perspective-taking and integrated it with a robot. The robot successfully solved a series of perspective-taking problems and was able to resolve different frames of reference to facilitate collaborative problem solving with a person. #NRL #NRLhistory #people #resiliency #revolutionize #innovation #usnavy #lab #scientist #laboratory #NRLresearch #ScientificAdvancements #scientificresearch #engineers #science #technology US Navy United States Department of Defense
