How Ohmite Survived the Great Depression ✈ 🛠 📻 Over 100 years, Ohmite has seen a lot over the years and overcome challenging times, including the Great Depression. It was a time of unemployment, bankruptcy, foreclosures, and food scarcity.     Despite the impact of the Great Depression, the radio industry was picking up steam, and Ohmite lug resistors and rheostats were critical to this burgeoning technology's success. Simultaneously, the aviation industry was rapidly growing, and Ohmite rose to the occasion by expanding its operations to supply critical rheostats for reliable precision controls. As the US entered World War II, this was another opportunity for Ohmite to position itself as a strong supplier. Ohmite worked tirelessly, often into the night, to support national defense efforts. Our dedication to reliability, quality, and precision made us a trusted partner during this critical time. Ohmite’s story is an example of taking opportunities in the face of challenges. How has your company found opportunities in challenging times? Share your stories with us here.

Since the company’s inception in 1925, Ohmite’s quality resistive components have made their way into first inventions, technical breakthroughs, and engineering feats of staggering scale, following the advance of electronics across the globe and across industries. Over the decades, Ohmite’s list of notable clientele included research labs, manufacturing giants, and government agencies.     Ohmite’s path through tech history began when the company grew along with the assurgent world of broadcast radio and soon after, the RF communications needs during World War II.    1932 – Allied Radio – Later became Allied Electronics, now a part of RS Americas 1942 – GE – FM radio transmitters    Even after the war, the military and its major contractors relied on Ohmite for high quality resistors, rheostats, and custom parts for its technological innovations in marine vessels.      1959 – General Dynamics – Triton Submarine  1966 – General Dynamics – Polaris Submarine  1967 – US Navy – Kennedy Aircraft Carrier    Similarly, aviation and avionics drew upon Ohmite’s deep engineering expertise for massive projects, using the most advanced electronics available at the time.    1942 – Pan American/Boeing – 314 Clipper  1950 – United Airlines/Boeing – Stratocruiser  1952 – US Navy – HUP-2 helicopter  1958 – Cessna Aircraft – T-37 twin jet trainer    If you’re building something as precise as the first commercially available computer or as high-powered as a transatlantic telephone cable or telecommunications satellite, you’d want to partner with the best in resistive materials and methods.    1955 – National Cash Register Company – early computers  1960 – Western Electric Company/Bell – first transatlantic telephone cable   1962 – Telstar – first radio relay satellite    Research scientists undertook huge electronic projects with Ohmite components in their circuits, whether measuring on the smallest scale or harnessing enormous amounts of power.    1943 – RCA – electron microscope  1964 – Argonne National Laboratory – atom smasher  1965 – NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Research Lab – plasma accelerators    In the 20th century, Ohmite resistors were the building block of the future.     We’re looking forward to another century of engineering — just as interesting as the last one.

Ohmite is out of this world (and out of this solar system)! 🚀 In 1977, NASA launched Voyagers 1 and 2, space probes that collected data from Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune before leaving our solar system and entering interstellar space. These are the first two probes to ever leave the heliosphere, and are still sending data back to Earth to this day. Both Voyagers 1 and 2 use parts made by Ohmite! These parts have surved nearly 50 years in space and are more than 15 billion miles away from Earth. Now that's reliability! Photo credit: Kevin Gill, Flickr, https://lnkd.in/g3WrB4HW
