  • “The first time she identified something with her patch on, I remember looking at my mother-in-law and both of us just starting crying. She was getting her vision back. It felt like a miracle.” After a severe eye injury from a rooster attack, Annabeth’s vision was saved thanks to the dedicated doctors at Oregon Health & Science University's Casey Eye Institute and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. With surgery, a temporary lens, and daily eyepatch therapy, her vision steadily improved—allowing her to identify objects again within a month. Dr. Annie Kuo, Dr. Allison Bradee, and their team at the Elks Children's Eye Clinic at Casey Eye Institute provided exceptional care, offering constant support and guidance along the way. Although Annabeth’s journey continues, her vision is improving each day. Read more about Annabeth’s incredible recovery. • Thank you American Board of Ophthalmology for making us smile!

🎃 Board-certified ophthalmologists are the pick of the patch! Here's a scary story: There was once a time when American patients had no clear way of knowing if their doctors had the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills to practice a medical specialty. 🫣 But it has a happy ending. #Ophthalmologists demanded better—for their patients and their profession—and implemented the rigorous, peer-regulated system of board certification we know today. In addition to its vision connotations, the Board's motto, Ex Obscuris Lux (out of darkness, light), quite literally represented the profession's drive to equip patients with critical information about physician competency that could empower them to make more informed choices about their #care. Thank you, board-certified ophthalmologists, for all you've done and continue to do, to advance excellence in eye care! #ophthalmology #ophthalmologist #boardcertified

  • “In honor of #BlindnessAwarenessMonth, we wanted to reach out and thank you guys for the biggest impact of our lives. Our son was born with bilateral sclerocornea and was given the opportunity to have sight thanks to his amazing cornea team and Dr. Travis Redd. Bilateral sclerocornea caused both of his eyes to be opaque with a cloudy layer over his whole eye causing no vision but slight light perception. We were told by an in-town specialist there was nothing for us to do until we were referred to Oregon Health & Science University. After our initial exam and consultation with Dr. Redd, we were given hope for the first time that they could try to do corneal transplants to attempt some vision. After going through both transplants, Silas now is showing tremendous improvements and is beating most odds that were against him. He is now able to reach for things and track objects, which is something we thought could never happen before meeting with Dr. Redd! Throughout the whole process, Silas’ care team has gone above and beyond, and continues to help support and advocate for him. We have been set up with glasses and are working to get him contacts to help improve his sight even more. We are forever grateful!” - Ellie, mom of 10-month-old Silas

  • The Casey Community Outreach Program has trained it’s 300th Vision Health Navigator! Providing training, support and resources to local Community Health Workers on vision health and eye care empowers them to provide better care directly in their communities. Only 3 years old, the training program is part of the Oregon Vision Health Network, which is a statewide network of community-based partners that seeks to improve access to high quality eye care in Oregon. The network focuses on training Vision Health Navigators, supporting telehealth, and providing free vision screenings through the Casey Community Outreach Program’s mobile eye clinics sites around the state. Together, we are promoting early detection and enhanced care coordination – an essential steps to eliminating preventable blindness in Oregon.

  • "Why Eye Volunteer" with Dr. Momo Ponsetto, 3rd year ophthalmology resident: "As resident physicians at Casey Eye Institute, we have the privilege of working with the Casey Community Outreach Program. I was immediately inspired by the sustainable partnerships and trust this program has built with communities throughout Oregon. When choosing a residency program, the opportunity to serve diverse Oregonians was important, especially as an Oregonian myself. I chose ophthalmology because of the relationships you can develop with your patients - service through vision care gives you a glimpse into what is important to our patients and how the gift of sight can dramatically improve quality of life. I love volunteering with the outreach program, because every interaction re-invigorates my “why”. Everyone on the team is so passionate and cares so deeply - I always learn so much and am grateful to their dedication that keeps the outreach program going. Also, it’s been a wonderful way to learn more about my beautiful home state. Hope to see you there at the next outreach clinic!" Thank you Dr. Ponsetto!

  • "I am deeply humbled and honored to be recognized as a 2024 Oregon History Maker. I am excited to continue advancing biomedical imaging and optics research, and proud to contribute to Oregon’s leadership in science and health care." Congratulations to Oregon Health & Science University's Dr. David Huang, who was named a 2024 Oregon History Maker by the Oregon Historical Society! This is an incredible honor in our community and we are proud of his achievements. Dr. Huang was recognized for co-inventing ground-breaking biomedical imaging technology called optical coherence tomography (OCT). The technology has transformed the way physicians detect and manage eye diseases, and is also increasingly used for conditions of the heart, skin, esophagus and more. Dr. Huang accepted the award supported by friends and colleagues from Casey Eye Institute, pictured left to right: Drs. Andreas Lauer, Aiyin Chen, Yifan Jian, David Huang, Yali Jia, and Thomas Hwang. Congrats again to Dr. Huang and all of the 2024 Awardees.
