In 2006, while opening a Johnny Carino’s restaurant in Dubai, I traveled with someone who would change my life forever: my future wife, Emily. We’ve been happily married for over 15 years and have two wonderful children. Having both grown up working in the restaurant industry, we decided to raise our boys with a hospitality mindset. Early on, we taught them how to show respect to restaurant staff—from making eye contact to greeting the server, asking how they were doing, and politely placing their order. Over the years, this practice has become second nature. It’s helped our boys spark genuine conversations with adults and other kids and their confidence continues to build. Small acts of kindness like these can foster meaningful connections. And they’re what separates good restaurants from great ones. The most beloved brands recognize the value of treating guests and employees with respect. They’re not singularly focused on same-store sales. They’re all about strengthening relationships one interaction at a time. So whether you’re trying to raise good humans or grow your restaurant business, put people first and lead with kindness.
