We Go. Episode Two: Stacked Horizons Meet Zeke Lau, one of the most powerful and explosive surfers of his generation. A proud Hawaiian with a deep reverence for Eddie’s legacy, Zeke knows full well the mental commitment and physical preparation needed to stand tall in this legendary lineup. Regarded as one of the fittest men in the sport, Zeke’s dedication to training and experience as a competitor leave him hopeful for an invite, but with only a handful of surfers from all corners of the world chosen, only time will tell. For more than four decades, "THE EDDIE" has stood as the most respected event in surfing. Named in honor of Eddie Aikau, a fearless Hawaiian waterman, lifeguard, and surfer who heroically sacrificed his life to save others, only the most daring big-wave surfers receive an invite to the event each year. Held on the North Shore of O‘ahu at Waimea Bay, only the biggest swells—40 feet and up—will summon the necessary conditions to run the event. Since its founding in 1984, the event has only run 10 times—a testament to the harrowing conditions needed to run. So, what does it feel like to receive an invitation to compete and train for The Eddie? We follow three members of the ‘OluKai ‘ohana, Zeke Lau, Eala Stewart, and past-winner Luke Shepardson, to find out. Last week, we witnessed a powerful display of strength, community, and perseverance as thousands gathered for a paddle out off the coast of Lāhainā in memory of the one-year anniversary of the fires. We took the opportunity to talk story with our ʻOhana, Archie Kalepa, about the ongoing efforts and a significant award recently bestowed upon the entire surf community of Maui, the ESPY. The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award is given to professionals who use sports to make a difference in their communities and around the world. In Maui, their impact has been both immediate and lasting, as this group continues to support each other and their beloved home.

The Hawaii Lifeguard Association hosted its state Jr. Lifeguard competition this weekend on Hawaiʻi Island. This program is vital for teaching kids the skills they need to be safe and help others in the water, with the ultimate goal of fostering the development of professional lifeguards across all the islands. We are honored to be the Official Footwear of the Hawaiian Lifeguards and to support them through the Ama OluKai Foundation.

Started by Zane Kekoa Schweitzer, Kahākūkahi mentors the keiki of Maui in the ways of ocean stewardship, safety, and beyond.
