  • Meet Isaac, Endpoint Engineer at OPPD. 👋 Heralded by his co-workers as the solver of unsolvable problems, Isaac's journey to OPPD began in his native country of Ghana. It was in Ghana where he noticed his skills in school leaned toward science, math and computers. On top of those natural inclinations was the inspiration that came from his father, who worked at Ghana's main electricity supplier for over 30 years. While studying in China, Isaac developed a strong work ethic. After intense focus on classes for his mechatronics degree, he made it a ritual to visit local roadside vendors to eat his favorite beef dumplings. With his degree in hand, Isaac found a home in Omaha and a place at OPPD. And with all his knowledge and experience, Isaac faces challenges head-on, finding resolutions to employee technology requests and long-term projects. Isaac's advice to aspiring engineers? “Accuracy before speed! Spend time getting it right and improving upon the solution over time. When it comes to being a good engineer, there are no shortcuts."

  • Meet Caleb, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Meter Technician at OPPD. 👋 Previously working on both sides of the meter as an apprentice line technician and then as a journeyman electrician, Caleb gained the experience, skills and expertise needed to thrive in his role at OPPD. As an AMI meter technician, Caleb works on a variety of tasks, from testing new software and hardware to participating in training sessions. With the rise of AMI, the department is experiencing significant changes, ensuring that no two days are the same. This constant change keeps him engaged and ready to adapt. Once AMI is fully implemented, Caleb and his team will be able to see real-time data, allowing them to detect outages and restorations more quickly. This advanced system enhances communication between OPPD and its customers, providing valuable insights into the electrical grid and enabling faster storm recovery. It will also allow customers to monitor and manage their energy usage via an app. Caleb's advice to any prospective meter techs out there? 1️⃣ Make sure you like working in the electrical field around energized equipment. 2️⃣ Become proficient in electrical theory via trade school or an apprenticeship. 3️⃣ Sharpen your tech and computer skills. 4️⃣ Finally, talk to or shadow a current meter technician to get a real sense of the role.

  • This summer, we were proud to once again partner with MCC Community Education - Nebraska to sponsor a youth Sustainability Boot Camp. Over four weeks, the students learned about sustainability through activities like hydroponic growing, composting experiments and taking a tour of the OPPD Arboretum. OPPD experts in their respective fields gave tours and showcased their knowledge in topics such as solar and prairie conservation. This collaboration with MCC offers an interactive, engaging way to further take part in our community. ♻ 🌻🌞
