NCAA plans to close 12-man penalty loophole after Oregon used intentionally Days after Dan Lanning and Oregon took advantage of a college football rule loophole, the NCAA Football Playing Rules Committee is actively engaged in making an in-season action. The Ducks sent 12 defenders onto the field with 10 seconds remaining against Ohio State on a third-down play. The Buckeyes threw an incomplete pass as Oregon was penalized, with four seconds running off the clock. NCAA rules currently do not require the clock to be reset after a 12-men penalty is called. The NCAA is now evaluating in-season action after the controversial call impacted Oregon's win over Ohio State. Changes would likely direct officials to return the game clock to the original time. https://lnkd.in/eswE2Phh

National Signing Day did not die – it may be its most thrilling yet The NCAA Division I Committee eliminated the National Letter of Intent program last week, leaving questions about the future of National Signing Day and the college football recruiting calendar. In reality, not much about the tradition of National Signing Day or the recruiting process is changing. Instead of recruits signing a National Letter of Intent as a binding agreement, they will sign financial aid and revenue share documents. It's the next step in the evolution of college athletics, as the House v. NCAA settlement is expected to begin July 1, 2025, allowing schools to share up to $22 million in revenue with athletes annually. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eswE2Phh

NCAA shortens football, basketball transfer portal from 45 to 30 days The NCAA Division I Committee voted Tuesday to shorten the college football and basketball transfer portal window. The decision takes effect this cycle and impacts the upcoming winter window. Over the last two years, the transfer portal has moved from 60 days to 45 and now to 30. In basketball, the portal will open after the second round of the NCAA Tournament and will conclude before the end of April. Athletes would still be given a 30-day window to transfer after a coach’s departure. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eZXJFtzs

Kirk Herbstreit says college football players have too much power in NIL Era During Saturday's College GameDay, former Alabama head coach Nick Saban and ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit weighed in on the current state of college football and the impact of NIL and the transfer portal. "The passion we have for college football, all over this country and everywhere we go, is too important not to have a system that works for the players and works for the competitive spirit of the game," Saban said. Saban, the seven-time national championship-winning coach, has been outspoken about how he believes the system is broken. Saban was on Capitol Hill in March for a roundtable with Sen. Ted Cruz where he called out donor-driven NIL collectives while supporting revenue sharing without athletes becoming employees. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eZXJFtzs
