Every time we get asked how OncoSwab started, and we respond with "It all started at a hackathon!", people are surprised. More conventionally, biotech startups are born out of a specific technology, and then an application to said technology is found. At OncoSwab, it all started by identifying a big problem (barriers in lung cancer diagnosis), followed by coming up with the simplest solution during the hackathon. And then, came the technology. Based in Switzerland, Start-up of the Week OncoSwab is developing a nasal swab test to detect lung cancer in the same way people tested for Covid-19 during the pandemic. According to CEO and co-founder Andrea Stephany Diaz, OncoSwab is about using the non-invasive nasal swab to detect biomarkers “right at the source” – the airway. “We strongly believe this direct detection method has the potential to be more accurate compared to traditional blood-based tests. Designed for simplicity, it can be used both at home and in clinical settings, making it an accessible and cost-effective solution for early lung cancer screening,” she explains. Last year, there were over 400 new unicorns in the US, versus 61 in the EU. One can only wonder, what does the US have that the EU doesn't? As a founder who started in Europe and then went to the States, the answer to me was clear: a want and desire to back bold ideas, and a willingness to take risks. Not just from investors. From policymakers, from physicians, from early adopters, from the community. I am excited to see conversations like these being had by policymakers at the EU level. The pace at which technology is advancing allows us to make the most out of our own DNA, which is astonishing. At OncoSwab, our mission is to leverage state-of-the-art technology to make accurate predictions of lung cancer risk by identifying the presence of malignant DNA.
