One Region CEO Matthew Wells shares insights in the The Times of Northwest Indiana on why regional alignment is essential for Northwest Indiana to compete successfully on a national and global stage.

Just across the state line, major investments in quantum technology and advanced manufacturing are taking shape. The redevelopment of U.S. Steel’s South Works site in Chicago has reached the validation phase, bringing new momentum to an area with a strong and proud industrial heritage. This matters for Northwest Indiana. Through the Chicago Quantum Exchange-led Bloch Tech Hub, regional partners—including Quantum Corridor, Purdue University Northwest, Ivy Tech Community College, the Northwest Indiana Forum, and others—are working to ensure that NWI is positioned to benefit from these emerging opportunities. With the right planning and strategy, the Region can play a key role in the next wave of advanced technology and the economic development it will drive. Our challenge isn’t just recognizing what’s happening nearby—it’s making sure we’re prepared to engage and compete.

Congratulations to CQE corporate partners Microsoft and PsiQuantum: The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has selected these two companies for the final phase of a program aimed at determining whether it’s possible to build an industrially useful quantum computer much faster than conventional predictions. The companies have different approaches: Microsoft is building an error-corrected, utility-scale quantum computer based on a compact superconducting topological qubit architecture, while PsiQuantum is using silicon-based photonics to create an error-corrected, utility-scale quantum computer based on a lattice-like fabric of photonic qubits. Over 50 experts from DARPA’s test and evaluation team have exhaustively examined both companies’ specific technical approaches, their detailed plans for fault-tolerant prototypes, and their long-term R&D plans, components, architectures, systems development, and application utility. Well deserved recognition of one of our members, Akhtar Zaman! 👏
Advanced Engineering Services (AES) has transformed from a one-person operation—founder Akhtar Zaman—into a leading geotechnical engineering firm in Northwest #Indiana. Now, the company plays a vital role in several significant infrastructure projects. Zaman highlights the benefits of small business flexibility in providing responsive, affordable services. “We can talk to the clients directly and get decisions made in a matter of minutes, rather than waiting for days for the higher-ups to make the decision for us,” Zaman says. Support from the Northwest Indiana SBDC has been crucial in navigating challenges and fostering growth.
