Here’s a topic you might not know much about: seafood crime. This broad term includes illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, human rights abuses such as forced labor and human trafficking on fishing vessels, and fraudulent labeling or misrepresentation of seafood products. These activities not only undermine sustainable fishing practices, but they also threaten marine biodiversity and harm the livelihoods of coastal communities. Want to learn more? 🚨EU Ocean Week is coming up! 🚨 During this special annual occasion in Brussels, the ocean takes center stage as EU leaders discuss its future. And Only One is thrilled to be a part of it this year! We’re teaming up with all-star partners to host the Rethink Fisheries! event, which will bring together MEPs, NGOs, fishers, and the public to discuss bridging the gap between conservation and small-scale, low-impact fisheries. Unfortunately, this is no surprise – and we can’t accept this as the norm. Right now, highly destructive activities — including oil and gas extraction and large-scale industrial fishing like bottom trawling — are allowed in certain marine protected areas. This is because of loopholes and inconsistent regulations across the EU — often undermining the intended conservation goals of so-called “protected” areas. But we can change this. Add your voice in the fight to ban bottom trawling in MPAs across the EU by adding your name: https://lnkd.in/eeTtQHj2 https://lnkd.in/gi2YeN7c

Because it takes place at the bottom of the ocean, bottom trawling can be difficult to visualizebut we think @emmalopesart portrayed it beautifully. We also love what she says about it: “The fishing industry still portrays a falsely romanticised image of being fairly wholesome. This image is decades old. The truth is the huge majority of fish caught on this planet [are obtained in] highly extractive and destructive [ways] such as bottom trawling (pictured) in which enormous nets scrape the ocean floor catching almost everything in their path & releasing huge plumes of CO2. We all rely on healthy oceans for a healthy, livable planet. The fishing industry has pushed the delicate balance of life in the ocean towards dangerous tipping points. ” Stand with Emma and help #banbottomtrawling at https://lnkd.in/eEkVBvF2

BIG NEWS: One of the world's biggest plastic producers is signaling a welcome shift in ambition toward a stronger Global Plastics Treaty. According to @Reuters, the United States is now in favor of a more comprehensive stance in treaty negotiations, calling for a reduction in plastic production and the regulation of chemicals of concern — a change in tune from its previous focus exclusively on demand-side measures like waste management and recycling. While this is an encouraging sign, it's crucial that these commitments translate into concrete actions that have the power to effectively and urgently combat the global plastics crisis. As nations prepare for the next — and possibly final — round of treaty negotiations (INC-5) happening this fall in Busan, Korea, we need to keep up the pressure and hold leaders like the U.S. accountable to their promises. Add your name to the petition and stay tuned for updates as these critical talks unfold: https://lnkd.in/eMrxHM6P
