Raising Awareness for Colorectal Cancer with Dr. Darrel Ross, Radiation Oncologist at Onslow Radiation Oncology Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most common and preventable cancers worldwide, yet it continues to be a leading cause of cancer-related death. Early detection, preventative measures, and advancements in treatment options are essential in reducing both the incidence and mortality rates associated with this disease. The Importance of Early Detection Screening for colorectal cancer is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of developing the disease or to detect it at an early, treatable stage. The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals with average risk begin screening at age 45, though those with higher risk due to family history or other factors may need to begin screening earlier. Common screening methods include colonoscopies, stool tests, and imaging tests. Early detection allows for more effective treatment, potentially reducing the need for aggressive therapies and improving survival rates. What are Colorectal Screening Kits? Colorectal screening kits are designed to detect early signs of colorectal cancer by analyzing samples of stool (feces) for the presence of blood or abnormal DNA markers. These kits offer a convenient, non-invasive alternative to traditional colonoscopies and can be used at home, with results typically returned to a lab for analysis. What is a Colonoscopy? A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the inside of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. This procedure is typically recommended as a preventive measure for individuals over the age of 45, though it may be recommended earlier for those with a family history of colorectal cancer or other risks. Colonoscopies are performed using a long flexible tube called a colonoscopy, which is inserted through the rectum and navigates through the colon. This tube is equipped with a camera that allows the doctor to view the lining of the colon on a monitor, helping to identify any abnormalities such as polyps, inflammation, bleeding, or early signs of cancer. Raising awareness about colorectal cancer is essential to reducing its impact on public health. The first step is understanding the risk factors and the importance of screening. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine if a colorectal kit is right for you or if it is time to schedule your colonoscopy. If you have recently been diagnosed with colon cancer talk to your provider about sending a referral to Onslow Radiation Oncology. Watch the full Medical Minute https://lnkd.in/eGuRUtij
