Type 1.5 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, though it strikes in adulthood. “The critical issue for people to recognize is that if they have ‘type 2 diabetes’ that does not seem to respond well to usual treatments, they may in fact have type 1.5," said Dr. John Buse, an endocrinologist and the director of the University of North Carolina Diabetes Care Center.

Obesity is "not just a lifestyle choice; it really is a biological disease that we actually don’t fully understand,” says Janice Jin Hwang, MD, an endocrinologist at UNC School of Medicine. “The fact that we know these medicines work in the brain and the pancreas and they’re so effective is proof that it’s a biological mechanism that’s out of whack.”
