🌐 🇪🇺 "Europe 2.0 – upgrading Europe’s internet search capacity" - such is the title of a recent Horizon Magazine article about the OpenWebSearch.eu project. 📹 https://lnkd.in/dqJTTbCp Read about why building a European #OpenWebIndex (OWI) opens up multiple new opportunities for future web search and data retrieval and how it contributes to promoting the diverse European cultural landscape. 🗣 “We want to empower communities so that they can easily filter and find those parts of the web that are relevant to them,” says project leader Michael Granitzer, professor of data science at the Universität Passau. Additionally, privacy & data protection are an integral part of the project. This not only serves science & research teams, but also offers new possibilities for the European economy. A European OWI centers around European laws and values and serves as a new solid soil for tech startups and enterprises that appreciate digital sovereignty. 🌞 Summer Throwback! In August Noor Afshan Fathima from our consortium partner CERN spoke at the "5th International Data Power Conference" at University of Graz in Austria, introducing the OWS.EU project and how it can contribute to privacy preserving web search for users while strengthening digital sovereignty in Europe. The Data Power Conference hosts critical reflections on data’s power and the social, political, economic and cultural consequences of data’s increasing presence in our lives, workplaces, and societies. ➡ To learn more about the current status of OWS.EU, visit our website: openwebsearch.eu ➡ Find out more about ethical, legal and societal aspects (ELSA) of OWS.EU: https://lnkd.in/d_FSNKCy

Back to work with many new #community inputs from #ossym24 last week! Don't forget to stay connected via our monthly community update calls. Next one happening in three weeks, on 4November at 15.00 CEST. See you then?
Like is the case with food, knowledge tastes best when shared! 🌮It’s a wrap for #ossym24 -with a signature mascot and a growing community Friday‘s final conference day stimulated new discussions related to governance topics. 📍A big highlight was the Keynote speech by Nina Leseberg from Wikimedia Germany. She shared insights into the complex topic of community based content curation. 📍A panel on „Ethics & Society“ was led on by Christine Plote. The panelists also included Noor Afshan Fathima, Alexander Nussbaumer & Renée Ridgway, who shared results from their ongoing ethics working group. Risks and Opportunities assessments are at the core of defining ethical guidelines for #OpenWebSearch. The voluntary integration of Ethical Labels into applications based on OpenWebSearch was just one interesting concept that the panelists introduced.🥇 📍In a second panel session, led on by Alexander Nussbaumer, with panelists Renée Ridgway, Roderik (Rik) Viergever and Alex De Vries the environmental factors of AI in Web Search as well as the implications of an ethical smartphone in the context of data privacy were discussed. Moreover, the values and ethics of Open Seach Infrastructure from free software to open source were presented. 📍The conference ended with a refreshing contribution from the „Young Innovators“ Student session. Daphne Auer shared her concepts of User-Driven Re-Ranking for an Adaption of the Variety in Search Results; Felice Douglas and Susanne Krol shared creative Curation Strategies for OpenWebSearch including gamification nuggets. 🤖 And as a cool surprise, the #OpenSearchCommunity now has a new additional member. The Weebie mascot was created by Susanne Krol and handed over to project leader Stefan Voigt at the end of the session! What more could we have asked for! #ossym24 was filled with plenty of yummy food for thought and tons of exciting insights into manifold project results, which all make a piece of the puzzle. Thank you to all contributors and guests! Let us keep moving the needle forward! Together for a better net!

🎯 Ready, set, go! Day 2 of #ossym24 conference at Leibniz Supercomputing Centre kicked off with a bang yesterday! 🚀 Richard Socher, former Chief Scientist at Salesforce and founder of you.com, led the charge with a thought-provoking session on AI’s Jevons Paradox: “When AI gets cheaper, we don’t save costs—we just use more of it.” He also gave us a deep dive into **you.com**, an innovative chat-search assistant that's taking search to the next level with "Executed Code Output" and verifiable sources. Fun fact: **you.com** results outperformed ChatGPT in fact-checking. ✔️ 🔍 According to #ossym tradition we also explored two alternative search engines with Daoud Clarke from mwmbl.org (community driven and curated!) and **Simon Descarpentries** from Meta-Press.es (will find for you the media articles that other search engines do not find). 🎤 We had exciting parallel sessions with teams from the German Aerospace Centre and the University of Passau, offering real-world insights into the future of **LLM-powered search**. The afternoon featured a lively keynote by Dr. Martin Andree on why "Big Tech must go!" His "5 Tips to Free the Internet" sparked some heated discussions. Want to support Martin's mission? Check out and share his latest YouTube video, **“Big Tech must go”**—it dropped today! ⚖️ Afternoon workshops didn’t disappoint, either. Whether you were in the **Economic Topics** or **Legal Questions** camp, both sessions brought out some fiery debates. That's how we like it, right? 😉 💡 On a thoughtful note, **Christian Geminn** wrapped things up by asking you.com: “What are the legal challenges of an open web index?” The answer? “It’s a complex puzzle involving data protection, intellectual property, and ethical web crawling. But with the right approach, an open web index can foster innovation while staying legally sound.” And what's up **today**? ⏩ We’re excited for Nina Leseberg’s keynote on how the Wikipedia community maintains the quality of the digital encyclopedia. ⏩ We'll also dive into the ethical foundations of web search with the OSF working group. 🔥 If you’re lucky, you might even get your hands on an **ethical OS smartphone** (wow!). Don't miss the last **Science Tracks**, featuring talks by Daphne Auer on “User-Driven Re-Ranking for Adapting the Variety in Search Results“ and Felice Douglas and **Susanne Krol** exploring curation strategies for an open web index. Oh, and before you go—any guesses on where #ossym25 will be next year? a) France b) Finland c) Faröer Islands? 🤔 See you tomorrow!

🐝 The OWS.EU team is busy attending events and meetings these days. Being in direct contact with our community and stakeholders is a crucial part in adapting to recent developments that play a pivotal part in the future of #OpenWebSearch and #AI. Last week we attended the European Big Data Value Forum #EBDVF in Budapest; this week our consortium partners are coming together at Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching for our bi-annual full network event. On September 30th, a macro-economic study regarding the #OpenWebIndex was presented at BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt in Munich. The eye-opening study was conducted by Daniel Nowakowski and his team from Mücke Roth & Company as part of the OWS.EU community programme. Find a study link in the comments. And there is more to come. This week, the 6th Open Search Symposium #ossym24 brings together the Open Search Community and Media + IT researchers to tackle the next chapter in #OpenWebSearch.
