Ground Passenger Transportation

Developing smart tools for green public transport

About us

Public transport in small- and medium-sized central European cities is challenged by a decline of customers, difficult long-term planning and suburban connectivity gaps. To improve this situation and at the same time create more eco-friendly urban mobility systems, the OPTI-UP project fuses transport and urban planning with data-driven methods. New solutions for demand-responsive transport, intelligent route planning and fleet optimisation are tested by the partners in six pilot areas. Experiences and learnings will result in a toolkit and a joint strategy. This project is supported by the Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme with co-financing the European Regional Development Fund.

🚍 Sustainable public transport for the future 🌍 On 15-16 October, the technical meeting and steering committee meeting of the OPTI-UP project took place in Modena, Ferrari's home town. The meeting focused on a detailed analysis of local bus networks, including passenger data, sustainability challenges and financial issues. 📌 A special feature of the project is that each of the participating cities is required to implement a 'pilot action' to make public transport more sustainable and accessible. This could be modifying an existing service or introducing new services to help test the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. The event concluded with a tour of the public transport system in Modena, an inspiring example of how innovative solutions can improve urban mobility. The OPTI-UP project is well on track - we look forward to seeing how it continues! 💡🚍 📆 See you in Paks, April 2025. • A recent site visit to Osijek, Croatia, unveiled the city's efforts to address urban mobility challenges as part of the OPTI-UP project's initiative to enhance public transport systems. 🚊🚧 During the visit, partners EY and GPP delved into discussions about optimizing bus lines to boost ridership during off-peak hours and fostering a culture of public transport among residents. 👉 At Osijek’s previous attempts for line optimization, feedback from passengers has led to a reversion to previous bus routes. Osijek's accessible parking services, with low rates and abundant free spaces, further encourage the use of private transport over public options. ✅ The site visit included a tour of the depot and maintenance facility, as well as the construction site of the EU-funded tram line modernization project, which spans 9.5 km. This ambitious project aims to increase public transport usage, enhance the city's development, and elevate the standard of living for Osijek's citizens. The city of Osijek is preparing for a significant upgrade with plans to build a new depot and maintenance facility, equipped to meet the demands of modern urban transport while preserving its historical heritage. 📌 Stay connected for more updates as we drive forward with sustainable and efficient public transport solutions in Central Europe. #OPTIUP #UrbanMobility #PublicTransport #Osijek #InterregEurope #Modernization #SustainableCities

  • The OPTI-UP project continues to pave the way for sustainable urban transport, and latest site visit to Pécs provided a wealth of insights into the city's public transport network. 🚌💡 📌 On September 18th, 2024, the STRIA team met with the Tüke Busz Plc. to discuss the strides made in integrating electric buses and optimizing the public transport system. ✅ Pécs, a vibrant regional capital, has seen a transformation in its public transport with a criss-cross network that reduces journey times and simplifies transfers. With a fleet of 142 diesel and 18 electric buses, the city is committed to cleaner, more efficient services, as evidenced by the steady increase in passenger numbers post-pandemic. 📆 The site visit included a tour of key facilities, including the Uránváros bus station and the electric bus depot, offering a firsthand look at the charging infrastructure and maintenance operations. As we explore the redefinition of bus lines and the integration of e-bikes and scooters, Pécs stands as a testament to the potential of sustainable urban mobility. The city's focus on electric buses, powered by local photovoltaic plants, showcases a future where public transport and alternative energy go hand in hand. Stay tuned as we continue to share our journey and the innovative pilot actions that will shape the future of public transport in Central Europe. #OPTIUP #SustainableMobility #PublicTransport #Pécs #InterregEurope #ElectricBuses #UrbanInnovation

Exciting times ahead! 🎉 This summer, the OPTI-UP project is taking a deep dive into the heart of public transport networks in Central Europe. 🌏 Our goal? 👉 To seamlessly integrate public transport operations with local spatial planning in small and medium-sized cities.   ▶ The key point is having a look at a zoning map of each city concerned. This provides the baseline facts of the relation of public transport and urban planning. And notably, it points out ways of improvement - from optimizing routes to connecting peri-urban and urban areas and reducing emissions by using alternative fuels.   ▶ The exact way of improvement is based on analysing the operation of the public transport network, considering the needs of residents, the efficiency of services and financial indicators. When all the above are done, then best practices assist the further harmonisation of the planning processes for tighter alignment between urban (spatial) and public transport uses. ✅   👉 Stay tuned as we continue to drive change and foster a greener, more connected future.   #InterregEurope #OPTIUP #sustainabletransport #cooperationiscentral #madewithinterreg
