About us
The History of Orange County: In 1609, Henry Hudson sailed up our Hudson River and anchored the "Half Moon" in Cornwall Bay. Orange County was established in 1683 as one of the original counties of the Province of New York. The county name is derived from King William III of England who was a Prince of the House of Orange. George Washington established his longest residency during the Revolutionary War in Newburgh. It was here that he founded the Order of the Purple Heart, and in 1850 Washington's Headquarters became the first Registered National Historic Landmark in the United States. The United States Military Academy at West Point has produced military heroes of great renown such as Eisenhower, Patton, and Schwartzkopf. The oldest military academy in the United States rises imposingly over the Hudson River and is still one of the most popular tourist attractions in the northeast. Orange is the only New York county located between two rivers, the Hudson on the east, and the Delaware on the west. At one time the Delaware and Hudson Canal connected them. A section of the D&H can still be seen in Cuddebackville along with a museum housing canal artifacts and history Picnic at Washington's Headquarters, hike Storm King Mountain, play golf at one of our beautiful courses and tour historic West Point. Orange County - a wonderful place to live, visit, and work!

County Executive Steve Neuhaus and Legislator Kevin Hines participated in the Farmside Acres annual “Trees for Troops” donation drive on Monday morning in Cornwall. The trees will go to military families at MacDill Air Force Base (Fla.), Robins Air Force Base (Ga.), Fort Moore (Ga.), Fort Stewart (Ga.), Fort Leonard Wood (Mo.) and Joint Base Langely-Eustis (Va.). Since 2009, Farmside Acres has collected more than 10,000 trees for the Trees for Troops program, which brings farm-grown Christmas Trees to U.S. troops and families at military bases in the U.S. and overseas. Farmside Acres is one of the country’s top Trees for Troops donors. The County always enjoys participating in the holiday event.

County Executive Steve Neuhaus and DPW Commissioner Erik Denega have announced the completion of the Board Bridge in Blooming Grove. The Board Bridge carries Round Hill Road over the Cromline Creek. The 38-foot span bridge was originally constructed in 1955 and is now fully replaced. The new bridge includes wider shoulders and was rotated slightly to match the existing roadway. It was constructed on deep pile foundations to remove its previous scour critical bridge designation. We know how important this bridge is to County residents and we are excited to see it fully opened again.

County Executive Steve Neuhaus, Emergency Services Commissioner Peter J. Cirigliano II, and Orange County 911 Deputy Commissioner Greg Schmid presented the County’s 911 dispatchers and supervisors with meritorious service awards on Tuesday for their exemplary work during September’s Farmingdale High bus accident on Interstate 84 in Wawayanda. County Executive Neuhaus created the Meritorious Service Awards in 2018 to honor first responders who work hard every day to keep Orange County residents safe. The call volume on the day of the Farmingdale bus crash was heavy, but as always, our 911 dispatchers remained calm and collected. They played an integral role in the response to the emergency and we are proud of the work that these men and women conduct every day.
