🌟Eventful ANA Membership Assembly in D.C.🌟 During the 2024 American Nurses Association (ANA) Membership Assembly, more than 500 nurses joined to advocate for nursing and to advance the future of nursing. ANA’s Hill Day on June 27 included nurses and nursing students from across the United States, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. These nurse advocates spoke to their legislators about four key topics: restricting mandatory overtime, protecting the long-term care facility regulations from Medicare, improving Nurse Practitioner prescriptive authority, and addressing the nurse faculty shortage. On June 28 and 29, delegates also considered and passed two important sets of recommendations in the ANA Dialog Forums. The first called for better mental health resources for nurses and alternative to discipline programs for state boards across the country. These recommendations also demanded that employers be held accountable for the work environments of nurses. The second set of recommendations called for better integration of care for veterans and improved training for nurses to care for veteran populations. Delegates also considered updates to the Code of Ethics for Nurses. Some changes included: emphasis on civic responsibility, global engagement, and solidarity in promoting human and environmental health. Several delegates also recommended that the Code of Ethics for Nurses be more accessible. Updates to the Code of Ethics will be forthcoming. On June 29, the voting representatives of ANA’s Membership Assembly re-elected our very own Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, of the Oregon Nurses Association to a second term as ANA president to represent the interests of the nation’s more than 5 million registered nurses. As ANA’s 38th president, Dr. Mensik Kennedy will lead the ANA Board of Directors and ANA Board of Directors Executive Committee and continue to work on issues and initiatives that are critical to advancing nursing and health care.

All eyes in Medford are on Providence as they put up metal fences ahead of our strike tomorrow. One ONA nurse, Caroline Allison, responded to the news saying, "Providence wants us to talk about the fence when we should be talking about the issues...why don't you want to increase our healthcare? Why don't you want to put safe staffing protections in our contract?" Not only are the fences in bad taste, but like Caroline points out, they are ultimately unimportant.
