July is Disability Pride Month! At ODHS, we’re proud of AbleNet, our Employee Resource Group (ERG) dedicated to strengthening awareness, inclusion, and acceptance of disability within our agency culture and in the community. AbleNet regularly hosts events and partners with other ERGs in ODHS to provide information, resources, discussion, networking, consultation, training, advocacy, and other assistance as needed for both ODHS employees and the people we serve. AbleNet’s vision of recognizing, appreciating and supporting the talents and skills of people with disabilities is an essential part of our mission to build well-being for everyone in Oregon. Curious about our image? The elements in it are part of the new disability pride flag. The flag was designed by Ann Magill, a disabled woman, to celebrate people with disabilities. Each color and element of the flag has a meaning. Black: Mourning for ableist violence and abuse victims Red: Physical disabilities Gold: Neurodivergence White: Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities Blue: Psychiatric disabilities Green: Sensory perception disabilities The colors are muted on purpose to help people with epilepsy and migraine sufferers. The parallel stripes represent solidarity within the disability community. They are at an angle to represent cutting across the barriers people with disabilities face.

Today marks 25 years since the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Olmstead v. L.C., a milestone that declared unjust segregation of people with disabilities as discriminatory under the ADA. This landmark ruling has paved the way for services to be delivered in more inclusive settings, promoting community participation and inclusion. Let's celebrate the progress we've made and continue to champion inclusive communities and workplaces.
