Fostering Improvement and Widespread Adoption of Organic Farming Systems

About us

Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 with the goal of advancing organic agriculture through scientific research. As a leading champion of organic farmers across the U.S., OFRF works to foster the improvement and widespread adoption of organic farming systems by cultivating organic research, education, and federal policies that bring more farmers and acreage into organic production. Through these efforts, OFRF is creating a more resilient and sustainable agricultural system that values healthy environments and healthy people. OFRF grants have lasting impacts on organic farming knowledge and the lives of farmers and researchers. We regularly survey organic farmers about their challenges and information needs, and use their feedback to define research funding priorities. One unique facet of OFRF grant projects is close collaboration between farmers and researchers. Overall, OFRF grant funding has advanced scientific knowledge and improved the practices, ecological sustainability, and economic prosperity of organic farming. OFRF grants have played a crucial role in advancing the careers of young scientists, enabling them to leverage significant additional funding. OFRF works to ensure that policymakers are informed about organic farming issues and farmer needs by advocating for programs that support organic producers. We are currently engaged in a grassroots effort to support passage of H.R. 2436 – The Organic Agriculture Research Act, which would increase funding for the Organic Research and Extension Initiative (OREI) and make it part of the permanent Farm Bill budget (aka “the baseline”). OREI has a solid track record of delivering quality research and education about organic systems. The results of OREI-funded research have had impacts well beyond the organic community in areas such as soil health and seed breeding. Sign up for our monthly online newsletter at ofrf.org to receive the latest news and learn how you can get involved.

  • "The arrival of frost, whether early or late, is inevitable for the Northern regions of the country, a seasonal deadline that irrevocably holds firm. The same can’t be said for the Farm Bill or the federal appropriations process..." Read more from Gordon's Policy Corner: https://lnkd.in/gWsQyEQ6 This month he dives into why the Farm Bill and federal appropriations processes are crucial for organic agriculture and climate resilience, and how pending deadlines could impact funding for vital agricultural research and conservation programs. #OrganicAdvocacy #Policy #InvestInOrganic #FarmBill2023 #FarmBill2024 #FarmBill2025

  • Feed costs represent 65 to75% of the total cost to produce a market hog and have a significant impact on profitability of organic pig farming. Utilizing grains harvested from winter cover crops as a feed ingredient for pigs can potentially protect the environment and reduce feed costs of organic pig production. 🐖🐖🐖 Thursday October 17th, from 2-3:30 p m ET you can join OFRF, in partnership with eOrganic for an enlightening discussion that will help farmers improve organic pig production efficiency and make decisions on raising small grains for organic pigs. REGISTER: https://lnkd.in/gi6jBWJ9 The webinar will showcase research by Dr. Yuzhi Li, a professor of organic swine production at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center and include her insights on best practices in organic pig production and key factors for saving production costs. • At OFRF, we are active members in the National Organic Coalition (NOC), and it is clear that any Farm Bill Extension that takes place needs to make sure programs continue seamlessly for organic producers across the country. You can use this action alert to make sure your representative understands the importance of these programs!

🔔 TIME SENSITIVE ACTION ALERT 🔔 The 2018 Farm Bill expired on September 30, 2023. Rather than passing a new Farm Bill in 2023, Congress extended the Farm Bill for one year. *But that Farm Bill extension is also expired now!* Without Congressional action, core organic programs including the Organic Certification Cost Share Program will expire, leaving thousands of organic farmers with a huge net increase in their annual certification costs. The Organic Certification Cost Share Program will disappear in 2025 unless Congress passes a five-year Farm Bill with funding or includes sufficient funding in a stopgap bill this fall! Contact your Senators and Representative today to ask them to fund core organic programs in the Farm Bill. Click here to automatically send a message to your Members of Congress! https://lnkd.in/ghZ-iqQY

  • 🙋♂️ CALLING FOR ANSWERS 🙋♂️ Drainage tiles & Soil Moisture We recently received an "Ask OFRF" question that stumped us a little bit, so we're asking you - our network of organic farmers and researchers - for help! The question was about the impact of drainage tiles on soil moisture and runoff, in particular if there has been any research done on the quality of the soil beyond the depth of the tiling? The question-asker expressed concern that tiling has not been researched well enough to put regulations on it, and that more research is needed on the impacts on soil moisture and water holding abilities. We pointed the question-asker in the direction of a paper by Brian B. Gedlinske, "Agricultural Drainage Tiles: An Overview of their Use, Benefits, and Effect on Hydrology and Water Quality" (2014) which is succinct and does a good job noting the need for regulation and promising mitigation strategies. (https://lnkd.in/gg8hU84i) We also noted that NRCS has a nice Drainage Water Management Plan factsheet that addresses some mitigation strategies, which also happen to be sound conservation practices. (https://lnkd.in/gH58qEaY) What else would you add? What do you know about Drainage Tiles and Soil Moisture Runoff? Tag your water & soil researcher friends! #DrainageTiles #SoilMoisture #AgricultureResearch #SoilHealth #AskOFRF #WaterQuality
