About us

We are a network of Black leaders in academics, health and social services, and community associations. Our group of leaders are committed to dismantling the systemic barriers that exist within our mental health system which prevent Black people from accessing culturally appropriate mental health supports and resources. This coalition aims to hold health system leaders accountable to ensuring safe, accessible, and culturally appropriate mental health programs and services for the African, Caribbean, Black community in Ottawa. Our members believe that we can build on the resilience that already exists in our African, Caribbean and Black communities through collaboration and advocacy for equitable access to appropriate mental health support and a more diverse and inclusive mental health system

The Ottawa Black Mental Health Coalition (OBMHC) is dedicated to creating a more equitable mental health system for Black residents in Ottawa. They aim to improve access to culturally responsive mental health support and resources, ultimately leading to healthier outcomes within our community. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Strategic Planning event titled "Strengthening Our Collective Impact – A Day of Connection and Alignment." It was a powerful day of connection and strategic visioning with fellow professionals from various member organizations across the city. The event was expertly facilitated by Sayid Consulting, who led us through exercises that encouraged critical thinking about how we can drive meaningful change—advocating for an anti-oppressive mental health system, expanding equitable access, and raising awareness to reduce stigma. Thank you Michelle James, Manal Sayid, MBA, Basant Mohamed, and Ayoub Sayid for your approachability, expertise, and attention to detail throughout the day. Your organized process allowed many of us to take a break from our daily responsibilities to focus on this overarching vision, making the experience feel seamless and impactful. As the event drew to a close, I kept thinking of the African proverb, "Each one, teach one." The saying highlights the importance of sharing knowledge to strengthen the community, and the planning session served as a reminder of that value. I left feeling inspired, aligned, and more committed to participating in work that makes a positive difference in Black mental health. • OBMHC supports men’s mental health initiatives in the community. See what the Brotherhood Coalition is talking about and how they are making space for men to have conversations about mental health.

Last month, we held our first Brotherhood Coalition “HeLeads” Black Mental Health session. The conversations were authentic, personal and full of heart as participants opened up with a level of vulnerability. The commitment to healing truly embodied the spirit of our organization and the message we aim to spread. We are so proud of the courage shown by everyone who shared their stories and perspectives. We want to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and made the event such an impactful experience. A special thank you to our moderators, BHC Director of Marketing, Daniel "Goldstripes" Desir and public speaker, brand strategist and Mental Health Ambassador Marlon Cole, CISO , who did an incredible job guiding the discussion. Their collaborative, thoughtful approach and ability to create a safe, open space for participants to express themselves were truly remarkable. Thank your for your leadership! At BHC, we believe these conversations surrounding Black male mental health are essential. Therefore, this is just the beginning—we’re committed to pushing forward with more events and opportunities for dialogue, healing, and taking charge of our mental health. So stay tuned! Another huge thanks to the Real House of Ensemble and City Fidelia, for graciously providing us with their beautiful space to host our event. We couldn’t have done it without your continued support! We’d also like to give a tremendous shout out to the Ottawa Black Mental Health Coalition for their unwavering support and for providing critical mental health resources to all our participants who attended. Your partnership is instrumental in driving our important work forward. Finally, a special thank you to Daniel Afram MSW, RSW , Elected Social Worker, for attending and contributing your powerful voice to this conversation. Together, we are taking the steps needed to heal, grow, and empower Black males to lead in their mental health journeys. Let’s keep pushing forward. The BHC Core Team

  • Housing as Healthcare - October 18th Topic: Housing as Healthcare When: Friday, October 18, 2024 Time: 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. This event is part of an ongoing speaker series designed to bring together key leaders and influencers from the health and wellness sectors for a conversation about the changes and shifts that will affect our health-care system in the years to come. Ottawa is grappling with homelessness and mental health crises. This has led to more people living without stable housing and without mental health and substance use health supports. By working together to improve access to affordable housing with built-in client-centred health and social services, different sectors can support people to live more stable lives, improve their health, and reduce hospital and shelter pressures.   Click here to RSVP https://lnkd.in/gyqNFeST
