There is increasing convergence around the idea that an intersectional approach to climate change adaptation is needed to reach the most vulnerable people, who often experience intersecting structures of inequity. ❓ But what does this look like in practice? And how does #intersectionality build on already established principles for inclusive adaptation? 📽️ Our new explainer video breaks this down: https://lnkd.in/g8xRH9Ux If you’re at #COP29 and heading to Development and Climate Days on Sunday, please join Joanita Babirye, Bridget K. Burns, Diego de Leon Segovia, Menka Goundan and I to unpack intersectional approaches to adaptation in an interactive session. We'll be in Natavan Room at 3:45 - Session 4C. #DCDays24 International Institute for Sustainable Development | OUT for Sustainability | Girls For Climate Action | Women's Environment & Development Organization | Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW) With gratitude to IrishAid for the support in undertaking this work!

Tomorrow at #COP29 I’m hosting this discussion and mixer on the intersection of 2SLGBTQAI+ folks and climate change. Evidence shows that queer folks are made more vulnerable than most during shock events related to climate disasters. I hosted similar events in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and this year in Azerbaijan, in the Canada pavilion at various climate conferences. One thing is clear to me: Canada remains one of the best places in the world to be who we are, and for that I am incredibly grateful. We must continue to use our voice and privilege to make space for folks who can’t. Canada has tons to do on climate and Indigenous rights, but on queerness we remain one of the best places to be born— makes me proud. Hosting such a discussion in a country where homosexuality has extremely limited legal protections comes with its challenges. The UNFCCC spaces offer protection that would otherwise not be possible. I am excited for this chat with Dr Joss Reimer, Parul Kanwar, Diego de Leon Segovia and Cory Witter tomorrow. Grateful for the support from Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canadian Medical Association, Northern Council for Global Cooperation and Queering Climate Dominique Souris. See you there! 🍻

Thank you to the #LGBTI Stakeholder Group for the invitation to their side event last week at the sidelines of this year's #HLPF where we had the opportunity to review #SDG 1, 2, 12, 16, and 17 from a #queer perspective. During my intervention, I had the opportunity to show the data we have collected at OUT for Sustainability regarding the intersections between #proverty, #foodsecurity, and #climatechange, and the differentiated impacts in regards to #humandisplacement, as well as the importance of upholding countries to their #HumanRights and #NDC commitments to ensure inclusive and equitable #climateaction. Thank you very much to my fellow panelists Lawrence Shone Edem Adjei Lilit Avetisyan sarita kc and Caleb Orozco for their brilliance, as well as to our extraordinary moderator Rashima Kwatra (she/her) and event coordinator Maria Aïcha Boumeddiene With only 17% of the agenda on track, we cannot afford to go one step backward, especially not without those we are leaving behind.

Climate justice advocate working with nonprofits, dedicated individuals, and grassroots campaigns to restore ecosystems and advance social equity so all living beings can thrive.
Our latest episode on Closing the Gap podcast features the incredible Brandon Rothrock, board member of OUT for Sustainability ✨ Brandon is a queer geographer dedicated to research and advocacy that advances environmental justice for marginalized communities. He embraces his LGBTQIA+ identity and supports his communities through sustainable energy policy. We discussed barriers for LGBTQIA+ individuals in the environmental field, how climate justice exacerbates discrimination against LGBTQIA+ communities, and what we can all do to support the queer community year-round. Check out OUT for Sustainability statement on the occasion of the 2024 High-level Political Forum #HLPF review of #SDG13 #CliamteAction. It is deeply concerning that only 17% of #SDG remains on track, with climate showing no improvement. Only through an intersectional approach will we be able to deliver inclusive, equitable, sustainable development that truly leaves no one behind. #ClimateChange #SustainableDevelopmnet #UnitedNations #intersectionality #LGBTI #Lesbian #Gay #Bisexual #Trangender #Intersex #Queer #LGBTIStakeholderGroup Diego de Leon Segovia

Check out the latest Commission for Environmental Cooperation discussion paper on #environmentaljustice for #LGBTQ communities across North America
It is with great excitement to share the Commission for Environmental Cooperation discussion paper on Environmental Justice for 2SLGBTQIA+ Communities: Dimensions on Queering Environmental Policy in North America, I had the privilege to co-author together with the outstanding friends and colleagues Pablo Emiliano Reyes Galindo and Leo Goldsmith Following the first roundtable discussion in October of last year, the executive director commissioned this paper to further understand the theory and practice of the impacts of #EnvironmentalDegradation and #ClimateChange on #LGBTQ people and their Indigenous counterparts, success stories of policy integration and their implementations and recommended next actions for the Canadian, Mexican, and US governments. The report delves into queer and environmentalist theory to provide a solid conceptual framework, followed by a comprehensive summary of the most up-to-date peer-reviewed data on the #intersectionalities of #2SLGBTQIA+ and #AirQuality, #GreenSpaces, #ClimateDisasters, #FoodSecurity, #LandUse, #WaterSustainability, #Biodiversity, #Health, #GreenFinance, #Pollution, and #EnvironmentalActivism. The study looks at both the continental territory of Turtle Island (AKA North America) as well as the overseas territories in the Caribbean and then the Pacific Ocean that are part of the region. It also provides a historical and current set of actions taken by this #Canada, #Mexico, and the #UnitedStates to address the needs and experiences of the queer population in the region in relation to #ClimateAction, #EnvironmentalConservation and #SustainableDevelopment, and concludes with a series of recommendations to attend existing gaps. I look forward to hearing your comments and questions. Very special thanks and huge congratulations to (the real super stars) my fellow authors, as well as Jorge Daniel Taillant for his leadership and vision and his amazing team Georgina O'Farrill Patrick Tonissen José Antonio Casis, and all the contributors Natalia Villaran-Quinones Beth Teper Harlan Pruden Reilly Hirst Visionary, Strategic and Fiscal Leader Allie Shinn Lilian Barraclough MES, EPt (and any one missing!) It was a great honor to join on behalf of OUT for Sustainability the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights #SRHR #ClimateJustice Coalition side event for #SB60 a couple of weeks ago, organized by the Sex & Samfund / Danish Family Planning Association, Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW), and Women Deliver. Sexual and reproductive #health is at the core of inclusive climate action. It is the intersection point that brings together the needs and experiences of everyone being affected by #ClimateChange and, therefore, the key to inclusive and equitable #CliamteAction. Together with the colleges of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Women Deliver, Women's Environment & Development Organization, and YOUNGO, we reviewed the Gender Action Plan and its significance to the implementation of other intersections linked to health, including climate finance, women's rights, gender transformative policies, youth and child development, and LGBTQ+ communities. One particular point that stuck was the recent analysis conducted by #UNFPA that identified that 38 countries have integrated sexual and reproductive health rights into their National Determined Contributions (#NDC), of which 3 already address issues on #SOGISEC. This gives me great hope that we will have a base to continue working forward. Not a single step backward!
