We are a full-service general contractor specializing in a variety of market sectors throughout Oregon and Washington.

About us

P&C Construction was established in 1961 and is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary as a general contractor locally owned and operated in Portland, Oregon. The name P&C is a nod to our company founders, Ray Pettyjohn and Don Campbell, who wanted to start a general contracting business that put quality and interpersonal relationships above everything else. As they liked to say at the time, “If a client wants a screen door hung...we’ll go hang it!” In other words: no job was too small, no task too insignificant. They sincerely believed that honest collaboration and oversight would set their company apart and we’re proud to say that the standards for integrity they established in 1961 remain in effect today. We specialize in commercial construction projects for the public and private sector. Key markets include civic and community facilities, healthcare, education, historic renovation, and athletics. Our team excels at value engineering, sustainable construction, seismic upgrades, and complex logistical planning. P&C has the ability to self-perform selective demolition, concrete work, wood framing, wood siding and trim, interior finish carpentry, miscellaneous steel erection, door & hardware installation, and division 10/11/12 installation.

This week, October 14 to 18, 2024, is Construction Inclusion Week, which is designed to build awareness for the need to improve diversity and inclusion in the construction industry by providing content and resources. This initiative is not just about raising awareness; it's about providing practical content and actionable resources to advance inclusion. By highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion, we drive improvements within our organizations, elevate our projects, and inspire a new standard of excellence and innovation industry wide. To celebrate, we held an event at our Concord/Oak Lodge to tour the site, watch the installation of the dowel-laminated timber (DLT) roof system, have lunch and review our “Five Pillars of Belonging.” P&C’s values are “the people, the experience and the craftsmanship.” Each of these tenets are held together by a true sense of belonging and camaraderie between our community of managers, planners, designers and builders. It’s also a crucial aspect of our company culture, supporting each other through the lifespan of each project. By promoting the five pillars and staying true to their message, we can collectively reach a level of success that cannot be measured by time or money.

Very proud that this October marks the tenth anniversary of P&C’s participation in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Annual Student Construction Competition in Reno, Nevada! Since 2015, Senior Project Manager, Parker Verhaeghe has been coaching and preparing the Commercial Division Team from the Oregon State University’s Construction Engineering Management (CEM) Program to compete against nineteen (19) other colleges in Oregon, Washington, California and Hawaii. Having graduated from OSU himself in 2007, Parker has made coaching these teams an integral part of P&C’s larger mentor/internship program, helping to usher in the next generation of builders and managers. Now joined by Hunter Karnopp (another OSU alumni), Parker and his team kicked things off last week to review objectives, go over expectations and provide an overview of the entire experience. To celebrate ten years, we’ll be posting lots more about how this competition unfolds over four months, what it means to our firm and to the students who have participated – stay tuned!

Construction Engineering Management, Business Management Student at Oregon State University | Sigma Chi | P&C Construction Summer Intern

It’s very bittersweet to announce my internship with P&C Construction this summer has come to a close. I would first like to thank Parker Verhaeghe and Hunter Karnopp for the amazing experience, and for the countless oppurtnuities I have had this summer to build myself as a worker in the construction industry and as a better person in general. This summer, I worked alongside Hunter and the team at Oak Lodge working on a 16,000 sqft ground up Library. I gained invaluable experience helping with RFI’s, submittals, contracts, change orders, as well as numerous other tasks. I also got the opportunity to get outside and help the foreman with tasks such as etching and chalking grid lines for subcontractors. Once again, I’m super grateful for the knowledge I have learned in the CEM industry and I can’t wait to use what I’ve learned in my future endeavors and career!

August 30th marks Brian Shoemaker’s 20th anniversary at P&C Construction! Since joining the firm in 2004 with a civil engineering degree from PSU, Brian has enjoyed exploring every aspect of P&C's construction administration. Beginning as a project engineer, he quickly worked his way into project management and eventually to P&C's vice president, becoming part owner himself in 2015. More recently, his operational support in estimating, project management, business development and office administration has given him the experience and skillset necessary to lead P&C into the future. Cheers to Brian’s last twenty years at P&C and more exciting years to come!
