Pacific Symphony leads a renaissance in the appreciation, accessibility and impact of classical music in Orange County.
About us
Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair for the last 34 years, has been the resident orchestra of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall for over a decade. Currently in its 45th season, the Symphony is the largest orchestra formed in the U.S. in the last 50 years and is recognized as an outstanding ensemble making strides on both the national and international scene, as well as in its own community of Orange County. In April 2018, Pacific Symphony made its debut at Carnegie Hall as one of two orchestras invited to perform during a yearlong celebration of composer Philip Glass’ 80th birthday, and the following month the orchestra toured China. The orchestra made its national PBS debut in June 2018 on Great Performances with Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” conducted by St.Clair. Presenting more than 100 concerts and events a year and a rich array of education and community engagement programs, the Symphony reaches more than 300,000 residents—from school children to senior citizens.

As we wrap up another memorable summer of Symphony in the Cities, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the families, communities, and city leaders of Costa Mesa, Mission Viejo, Orange, Lake Forest, and Irvine for coming together to support the Symphony and celebrate the joy of music at our free concerts under the evening sky. This season featured a dazzling performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and a special 100th Anniversary tribute to the Walt Disney Company, creating unforgettable moments for all who attended. We are especially grateful for the hard work of the Pacific Symphony staff, whose dedication has made it possible to expand this beloved series. Our deep appreciation also goes to State Senator Dave Min, whose efforts in securing funding have helped broaden our reach and bring the joy of music to even more communities. We are thankful for the continued support of Chapman University and President Daniele Struppa, who graciously sponsored us at Chapman’s Aitken Plaza for a beautiful evening of music under the stars. A special thank you to Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair for his passionate commitment to welcoming young audiences, particularly through his "Conductor's Clinic," which gave children the unique opportunity to lead Pacific Symphony alongside him. We also extend our gratitude to Rich Capparela for his warm presence at each concert, and to violin soloist Rubi Lee, Concertmaster of the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, whose stunning performances of the Tchaikovsky captivated our audiences. And, of course, a huge thank you to Pacific Symphony for their incredible performances. We’re deeply grateful to our presenting sponsor, City of Hope Orange County, as well as the community leaders and city staff who supported each concert, ensuring this cherished tradition continues. We’re honored to be part of this special experience and look forward to many more summers together.

Pacific Symphony and Music Director Carl St.Clair are thrilled to announce the digital release of the orchestra’s world-premiere recording of, “Fiat Lux,” by composer Sir James MacMillan and librettist Dana Gioia, Poet Laureate of the State of California. The commissioning and recording of Sir James MacMillan’s "Fiat Lux," as well as the world premiere performances in the 2022-23 Hal and Jeanette Segerstrom Family Foundation Classical Season, were made possible by a generous grant from Howard and Roberta Ahmanson, Fieldstead and Company, and the National Endowment of the Arts. Led by St.Clair on the podium, the recording features frequent collaborators Pacific Chorale (Robert Istad, artistic director), soprano Elissa Johnston, soprano, and baritone Christopher Maltman. Translated to English, fiat lux means “Let there be light.” The release coincides with the finale of Pacific Symphony’s 45th anniversary season leading into Carl St.Clair’s 35th season with the orchestra, making him the longest tenured American-born music director with a major American orchestra.
