Connecting Expertise with Opportunity
About us
Partners in Food Solutions (PFS) is a growing consortium of world-class companies — General Mills, Cargill, dsm-firmenich, Bühler, The Hershey Company, Ardent Mills and The J.M. Smucker Company — that mobilizes and remotely transfers employee expertise to small and growing food companies in Africa. Our goals are to improve food security, nutrition and economic development by helping Africa-based food companies produce more local, nutritious and safe food at affordable prices, and increase market demand for crops from smallholder farmers. By working with processors and mills in the middle of the value chain, we can help improve the whole value chain — from farmer to consumer. PFS collaborates closely with organizations such as TechnoServe, Root Capital and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and has been widely recognized by global leaders as an innovative, private-sector approach for improving food security, nutrition and economic development across Africa.

Recently, the COMESA EAC Horticulture Accelerator's regional strategic framework meeting took place in Zambia, gathering leaders from National Chapters, COMESA Secretariat, ACTESA Project, COLEAD.link, CABI and the East African Community collaboration. The goal? Refining strategies to build a robust, sustainable horticulture value chain with a focus on innovation, investment, and trade in East Africa. It's one aspect of our new program supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that focuses on three agricultural value chains in East Africa - potatoes, onions, and avocados. New PFS Program Manager Esther Mahihu offered insights into strategic pillars for the value chains, and shared case studies on boosting processor productivity.

Abigail Adjei-Boatey served as a quality assurance officer during her apprenticeship at Eden Tree Limited, a fruit and vegetable processor in Ghana, ensuring the company’s produce met the highest quality and safety standards. For her, this role was a deep dive into practical problem-solving, data analysis and communication and equipped her with a strong understanding of food safety regulations. One highlight during her tenure was developing and implementing a pasteurization protocol for Eden Tree’s new fruit juice line, which improved product safety and shelf life. Abigail believes she is now equipped to address critical challenges in food safety and quality through innovation and continuous improvement. Through PFS, she was also mentored by Ardent Mills’ Justin Bakke, and got to build invaluable professional networks which will offer her support and guidance that will last throughout her career. The hands-on experience, combined with seeing Eden Tree’s products thrive in the market were some of the best parts of her apprenticeship. Abigail is pictured here with PFS' Gordon Okyere (far left), Mandla Nkomo (middle), and Christian Dedzo (right).

Thank you Bernhard Van Lengerich, PhD. for hosting the Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS2024). It was a great platform for exchanging brilliant ideas on the varied roles stakeholders can play in addressing food system challenges.
Very informative panel discussion focusing on the power of many in addressing Global Food System Challenges Through a BioEconomy facilitated by Bernhard Van Lengerich, PhD. (Seeding The Future Foundation). Mathias Mogge (Welthungerhilfe (WHH)) stressed the importance of supporting small farmers with technology and encouraging bold social entrepreneurs, using AgriShare Uganda as an example. He urged governments to translate global policies to benefit local farmers, and emphasized the need for investment in research & development as a case for The Toothpick Project. Ertharin Cousin (Food Systems for the Future ) highlighted the need for financial capital to scale up, warning that governments are retreating from their CAADP commitments. Mandla Nkomo (Partners in Food Solutions) emphasized Africa’s growing role in the bioeconomy, while Vikash K Abraham Naandi Foundation) advocated for market-led, climate-smart production. #GlobalBioeconomySummit2024

Yesterday, I had the privilege of crossing paths with the CEO Mr. #MandlaNkomo, of #partnersinfoodsolutions a truly inspiring individual with a deep passion for the food industry. His commitment to supporting startups is unmatched. I recall our first meeting when he recommended I read four impactful books—so far, Mr.CEO I've finished The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid, and every line has been worth it. #PartnersinFoodSolutions, along with their team, are the driving force behind #Royalmilk apprenticeship program, which is proving to be a fantastic opportunity for learning and a catalyst for social transformation. I’m excited to continue building on these ideas and to explore new ways of collaborating to empower communities and foster sustainable change. #Leadership #Innovation #FoodSecurity #SocialImpact
