We create experiences that connect people with brands, places, and each other.
About us
Through a unique mix of large-scale installations, brand-specific projects, and in-studio research and development, we bring together design, technology, and architecture to create imaginative interactive experiences for clients ranging from global luxury brands and tech giants, to museums and real estate. Our work seeks to create richer, real-world interactions that connect people and engender new ways of living, working, and sharing, making everyday objects and spaces even more dynamic and interactive than the online and digital worlds. We push the constraints of static digital interfaces and bring interactivity to objects and spaces, creating multi-sensory experiences that are enhanced, rather than supplanted, by technology. We design, develop, and bring to fruition interactive experiences that enable new styles and technologies of interaction between people and computers, expanding the vocabulary of design.

What do we need all these motors for? 🤔 #kineticsculpture #designstudio #fabrication

It takes many Jameses to make a project come together at the studio. Which James are you? Picture 1: #ScowlingJames Picture 2: #SurprisedJames Picture 3: #BroodingJames

This structure is going to support a kinetic sculpture with 6 spinning elements, each with a unique axis of rotation. Because clearance between the elements is 4", the sculpture's base needs to be aligned with total precision. Part of this alignment involves figuring out how to get 6 bent, tapered poles perfectly vertical relative to the uneven floor of our studio. Our team came up with a creative solution that involves shining 2 lasers at each pole from ~90° apart. Because the poles are polished aluminum, the lasers reflect off the pole and onto two CNC cut wooden disks. When the lasers’ reflections align with the lasers’ beams on both discs, which are mounted perpendicular to the pole’s straight base, the pole is vertical. Easy peasy! #kineticsculpture #laserlevel #designstudio

One of our Design Principles is “Empower People to Explore.” We expect people to interact with our work in ways we don’t predict. This also means we can expect our fabrication team to interact with our work-in-progress in ways we don’t predict. Hence, the discovery of a-LUTE-inum. 🎵 (Audio on!) https://lnkd.in/e3dxWYb7 #cnc #fabricationshop #designstudio

A well designed sculpture creates the illusion that you’re watching magic, not mechanical engineering. (There might be some magic.) It takes a lot of thoughtful design decisions to cram a high torque motor assembly into the finite cavity inside a slender aluminum tube. #kineticsculpute #mechanicalengineering #designstudio

When you’re working with a +/-1mm tolerance it helps to have a second set of eyes. 👀 #kineticsculpture #mechanicalengineering #designstudio

Funny story, we had to make 2 of these 900lb steel frames. (The first one is already buried under concrete on-site; this one is for assembling and testing the artwork in our studio.) It took 4 members of our team to get this thing upright and through the door to our space. #artproduction #kineticsculpture #designstudio

Most of the work we do is invisible. Sculptures have skeletons; they have guts. More interactivity, more behaviors = more guts. Early on in the design process, we need to figure out where the motors, the controllers, and the wires all go. How do we build something attractive that can support 3,000lb of dead (ie: purely aesthetic) weight? Stay tuned for behind the scenes content "under the hood" of a new kinetic piece we’re installing this fall. 👩🔧 #kineticsculpture #designstudio #mechanicaldesign
