Ramadan is around the corner. Here are some words that might help you navigate Ramadan with your Muslim colleagues:
🌙 Ramadan - The 10th and most blessed month of the Islamic calendar known for fasting. Due to take place in March this year. Literally means to burn, because our sins are burnt away during the month
🛑 Sawm (Fasting) – Abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations from dawn to sunset. It is a lesson in self-discipline, spiritual reflection, and increased devotion
☕⏳ Sehri/Suhur - The pre-dawn meal, to prepare for the fast. This year, it will be about 5 am, going back a couple of minutes every day
🕟 Fajr - The 1st prayer of the day, immediately after Suhur. It's emphasized for men to visit the mosque and pray. Hearts are softer in the darkness of the night
🕐 Zuhr - After midday, the 2nd prayer. Muslims will try to fit this in during their lunch hour
🕔 Asr - The 3rd prayer, closest to the end of a 9-5 working day. Your Muslim colleague might want to adjust hours to make it to the mosque for this
⌛😋 Iftar - Lit. to tear open. The end of the fast. Muslims will break/open their fasts, usually with dates and water, following by a small snack and the 4th prayer...
🕡 Maghrib - The 4th prayer, immediately after sunset. After this, comes the main meal of the day
🕗 Isha - The 5th prayer, usually around 7:30 pm onwards in these times
😇 Taraweeh - The Ramadan-specific prayer, prayed after Isha, usually in congregation, in which Muslims stand for about 1.5 hours in prayer, attempting to finish the Quran recitation over the course of the month
🎉🎊🏁 Eid - The day after Ramadan ends. A huge celebration of family, friends and community to mark the sacrifices of the blessed month
📿 Tasbeeh - Prayer beads Muslims might carry to remind them of being God-conscious throughout the day
📖 Quran - The Holy book of the Muslims. Most will attempt to complete one recital individually during the day, and another during the night prayer at a mosque. God talks to us through the Quran
🙏🤲🏽 Du'a - Muslims raise their hands and ask God to fulfil their needs. It is a form of optional prayer, and is a conversation with God. We talk to Allah though our du'as
💰 Zakat & Sadaqah – Zakat is the obligatory charity given by eligible Muslims, while Sadaqah is voluntary charity. Many Muslims give generously during Ramadan, as good deeds are multiplied in reward
🌙 Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Power) – Considered the holiest night of the year, it falls in the last ten nights of Ramadan. It marks when the Quran was first revealed. Worship on this night is better than a thousand months
🕌 I'tikaf – A spiritual retreat in the last ten days of Ramadan, where some Muslims stay in the mosque for worship and reflection
