About us
Founded in 1967, the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn LDI) was the first academic institute of its kind, uniting the scholarly and clinical strengths of Penn’s leading business and medical schools. Over fifty years later, Penn LDI remains one of the most productive and influential health policy research groups in the nation. Penn LDI convenes experts from all of Penn’s twelve schools, the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to address our most pressing health care challenges. Through strong translation, dissemination, and policy engagement strategies, LDI bridges the gap between research and policy, ensuring that sound research evidence reaches policymakers and informs key debates. Can programs like guaranteed income and cash transfers boost economic security and health for low-income individuals? On October 18, the Opportunity for Health Lab, along with Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (Penn LDI), hosted a thought-provoking seminar, “Boosting Health Through Economic Policy,” moderated by our Director, Dr. Atheendar Venkataramani. Experts explored findings from 100+ pilot projects examining the benefits and challenges of unrestricted cash assistance programs to reduce financial stress, improve health, and support stability. Watch the full discussion here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eNyBr8Ct What are your thoughts—could guaranteed income be a sustainable path to better health outcomes, or are there better ways to support economic and health stability?

A recent blog post from the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (Penn LDI) discusses work by MSHP alumna Kira Ryskina about the impact of ownership changes on nursing home quality. Nursing homes purchased by a private equity group have been associated with poor patient outcomes, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services nursing home quality ratings lack information on nursing home ownership. Ryskina and colleagues found that a change in ownership led to a small negative impact on 5-star quality ratings for nursing homes but emphasized the importance of sharing ownership information with patients.
