Accelerating ideas to transform health care
About us
The Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation (CHTI) at Penn Medicine facilitates the rapid, disciplined development, testing, and implementation of new strategies to reimagine health care delivery for dramatically better patient outcomes, value, and experience. CHTI comprises six coordinated teams – the Center for Insights to Outcomes, the Center for Health Justice, the Nudge Unit, Way to Health, and the Center for Precision Resource Utilization. We focus our work in four areas: 1. Improving health and health care: Our fundamental objective is to improve the health, health care, and experience of patients, clinicians, and populations. We aim to see past health care’s conventional models and redesign care effectively, economically, equitably, and reproducibly. 2. Increasing health equity: As we strive to create transformational change in health and health care, we are committed to reducing inequity for historically marginalized, disenfranchised, and oppressed populations and combating forces that create inequities. 3. Enabling a culture of innovation at Penn Medicine: Every health care transformation depends on the people behind it. We aim to identify, engage, and retain exceptional clinical partners, support their development, eliminate their burdens, and celebrate their success. We are a center for - not of - innovation. 4. Driving innovation in the larger health care ecosystem: An innovation center's purpose is to support innovation within an organization. The purpose of a leading innovation center is to advance the field and enable other institutions to follow. We aim to create and disseminate new approaches and knowledge to facilitate the innovation of others. Visit our website and follow us on Twitter (@PM_Innovation) to learn more.

Last month, the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics gathered for the annual Roybal Retreat. Many CHTI-ers were in attendance to present research and to meet and learn from CHIBE affiliates. (The Nudge Unit, Way to Health, and the Population Health Lab are all among CHIBE's "family of programs.") Along with boosting clinical measures, some quality improvement efforts yield economic benefits, according to a panel session at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress last month. Rachel Kelz, director of CHTI's Core for Precision Resource Utilization (CPRU), who served on the panel, spoke about leveraging AI to achieve this double enhancement. “We have to find a way to use technology to extend ourselves beyond what we are being asked to do,” Kelz said. She shared examples from the CPRU portfolio including ambient listening technology for creating clinical notes and operating room schedule optimization. PA Health Professionals to End Gun Violence is a new coalition of clinicians and health experts striving to prevent firearm-related injuries and deaths. The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is partnering with this group to expand our hospital-based gun violence prevention initiative for broader reach and impact, distributing gun locks and information on secure firearm storage at pop-up events in Philadelphia to help make our community safer. We'll share more info as these events are scheduled! This work is made possible by grants from Accelerate Health Equity and the PA Department of Health. We were tickled at author Lisa Scottoline's humorous account of her colonoscopy experience, particularly "Bum Bot" – her nickname for our text message navigation program, Coloprep – in her latest blog post. Bum Bot would text me helpful directions every day, like: “Lisa, don’t forget to purchase your prep supplies!” Thanks for the reminder, Bum Bot! Next text, “Good morning, Lisa! Let’s take a look at your diet in preparation for your colonoscopy!” Another great idea! Then, “Lisa, Have you made arrangements for a ride home? Let us know!” Why, no, thanks for asking, Bum Bot! I began to look forward to his texts. Then: “Hi Lisa, remember that you really want to avoid high fiber foods! Here’s a short list of foods to avoid and foods to eat!” At this point I fell in love with Bum Bot. Human behavior is the final common pathway for most advances in medicine. No matter how effective a medication, protective a vaccine, or beneficial a lifestyle modification is, they can only improve health if clinicians recommend them, and patients use them. This is where nudges come in. A nudge is a change in the way information is presented – or choices are framed – that is designed to prompt, guide, or motivate good decision-making. A well-designed nudge will make the “right” choice the easy choice without restricting choice. The Nudge Unit at Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System is the world's first behavioral design team embedded within a health system. Under the direction of M. Kit Delgado, M.D., the unit designs, implements, evaluates, and scales evidence-based, behaviorally informed nudges that steer decisions toward higher-value care, better patient outcomes, enhanced public health, and greater health equity. Last week at the 2024 Nudges in Health Care Symposium, medical professionals across disciplines shared insights into how behavioral design can address diverse topics, such as the opioid crisis and maternal health.
