  • 🔶 🔷 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂?  Do any of the statements below apply to you? Take a privilege test to become aware of your privileges. The latest CORE Message by Lisa Szeponik, published on International Women's Day, reflects on privilege —what it is, how to identify it, and how to use it to help build a more equitable society. (Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eajM_s_9) 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁. While we don’t choose our privileges, how we use them is entirely up to us. We must be aware of our privilege, because privileges reflect the inequalities in our societies, and the underlying mechanisms often operate without us being aware of them. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆: 🔸 Challenge judgments and assumptions by questioning stereotypes or checking for biases before you act. 🔸 Make people feel welcome by actively including them in groups and valuing their contributions. 🔸 Encourage environments (and safe spaces) where people feel comfortable sharing their perspectives without fear of dismissal or discrimination. 🔸 Amplify the voices of marginalized individuals and communities by sharing their work, creating space for their perspectives in discussions, and stepping back when necessary to let them lead. 🔸 Question systems and structures that disproportionately benefit certain groups while disadvantaging others. 🔸 Share resources, create opportunities, and use your platforms to elevate underrepresented voices. 🔶 🔷 At CORE, we are committed to acting mindfully, continuously learning, and reflecting on how our privileges can be leveraged to build bridges between people and amplify the voices of those who often go unheard.

  • 🔶 🔷 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (#HRIA). HRIAs are in-depth analyses designed to identify and understand the negative human rights impacts of business activities. When integrated into a holistic, risk-based due diligence approach, impact assessments can be a powerful tool for engaging rightsholders, uncovering root causes and interconnections between different human rights issues, and ultimately, developing targeted solutions that effectively address those issues. 🔸 The key is to use them at the right stage of human rights due diligence (#HRDD). Before deciding on your HRIA approach, consider these questions: ▪️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗥𝗜𝗔? What do you want to achieve with it and how will the results be used in the organization? ▪️𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗥𝗜𝗔? Factors such as the geopolitical landscape, the complexity of the supply chain in question, and industry dynamics all influence which HRIA approach will be most effective. ▪️𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 about the region or the specific human rights issues? How urgently is this information needed? These elements play an important role in selecting an assessment approach that is fit for purpose and capable of generating meaningful insights. In some cases, methods such as rapid assessments, joint HRIAs, or sector-wide/landscape assessments can be practical and effective alternatives. Oxfam’s latest briefing, 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴, explores these HRIA alternatives, offering recommendations on when and how to use them while highlighting potential pitfalls to watch out for. Examples illustrate situations where rapid, joint or sector-wide assessments can serve as valuable tools for analyzing impacts and developing creative solutions. (The link to the Oxfam report is in the comments.) 🔸 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗥𝗜𝗔 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 – 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁. Regardless of the method used, the goal of all HRIAs remains the same: to gain a concrete understanding of the adverse impacts your business activities have on people so that you can develop meaningful measures to mitigate those impacts. 💡 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗛𝗥𝗜𝗔𝘀? • 🔶 🌐 Kicking off the "𝟱 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸" interview series with Dr. Bonny Ling! • 🔶 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 #InternationalWomensDay! At one of our first team meetings this year, we took a moment to reflect—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹. Privileged for the professional opportunities we have, the projects we get to work on, the inspiring people in our network, and for our team - 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. And yet, when we look back just 50 years, women in Germany still needed their husband's consent to make purchases - even for the purchase of a musical instrument. We’ve come a long way. But gender equality is still far from achieved. In fact, we see regression in some areas, with unconscious, privileged leaders in power slowing down progress and moving us backwards. • 🔶 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝘂𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 (#CSDDD) 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 in building human rights awareness, engaging internal and external stakeholders, securing resources and ultimately and most importantly, minimizing adverse impacts on people and the environment. 🔶 It is especially 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 who need to secure the support of senior leadership and peers across the organization – something that mandatory regulations have been a strong driver for. Human rights due diligence (HRDD) is an evolving corporate process that requires time for experimentation, adjustment, and learning from others. This delay would strip companies of valuable opportunities to refine their systems, exchange insights, and build internal capacity. 🔶 Even if this rushed and politically driven proposal moves forward (i.e., the EU Parliament and EU Council agree to these changes proposed by the EU Commission), forward-thinking businesses will continue to adopt meaningful human rights risk management, because it makes business sense. 👓 Read the latest CORE Message on how, if adopted, the omnibus proposal would change your #CSDDD implementation: https://lnkd.in/e4uUdnvz
