"The Care Quality Commission identified that inadequate foetal monitoring occurred in 45 of 92 cases (49%) in which a baby died or suffered serious brain damage while being born in a midwife-led unit in England. The findings show that correct monitoring is “critically important” to ensure care is safe in all maternity units, said Sandy Lewis, the director of the CQC’s maternity and newborn safety investigations (MNSI) programme. It analysed four common failings in the 92 births in a report that is intended to help midwives and doctors improve the quality and safety of care."

Malawi provides free healthcare to its 21 million citizens, but with only $14 allocated per patient annually, the challenges are immense. Women and children face significant health disparities, with high maternal mortality and neonatal death rates. The Area 25 Health Centre in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, serves around 700,000 people and exemplifies these challenges. The maternal health clinic struggled with high rates of stillbirths and neonatal deaths. Traditional methods of electronic fetal monitoring relied heavily on clinicians to interpret raw data and identify subtle warning signs, often under stressful conditions and with limited resources. To address these issues, Area 25 partnered with Malawi’s Ministry of Health, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine. They introduced PeriGen ’s AI-based solution that acts as an automated early warning system. This technology monitors critical vital signs, detecting abnormalities and alerting clinicians in real-time to act. The impact has been transformative. Area 25 has seen an 82% reduction in intrapartum stillbirth and early neonatal death rates. Linda, a healthy 3-month-old baby born at the health centre, is a testament to this success. The advancements at Area 25 demonstrate how innovative healthcare solutions can dramatically improve maternal and neonatal outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa. March of Dimes "Nowhere to Go: Maternity Care Deserts in the US" report showed that over 35% of counties are considered maternity care deserts. "This means that in 1,104 US counties, there is not a single birthing facility or obstetric clinician. Areas with no access to maternal care effect over 2.3 million women of reproductive age and 150,000 births in 2022. Our data confirms that women living in maternity care deserts and counties with low access to care have poorer health before pregnancy, receive less prenatal care, and experience higher rates of preterm birth. Our analysis revealed an excess of over 10,000 preterm births among those living in maternity care deserts and limited access counties in 2020-2022. These findings affirm that US systems, policies, and environments are failing moms and babies." Important finding? "Investing in digital technologies and telehealth is critical for improving healthcare access and outcomes. Renewed congressional support is required to ensure universal access to essential services like telehealth and broadband connectivity." At PeriGen , we are proud to support patients worldwide, providing them with the tools and resources they need to improve outcomes for mothers and babies, no matter where they are. ❤️
