“When most people think about highly sustainable buildings, it’s easy to think about all the bells and whistles you might design. What we’re really after is the high performance of the people inside—in this case, students. But we’re also thinking about their success. That’s the goal,” said Omar Calderon, AIA, principal at Perkins Eastman and lead designer of Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, which will be featured on an upcoming episode of America ByDesign (ByDesign TV). Enjoy some of the behind-the-scenes shots during the filming at Banneker on Tuesday with director and co-host Mike Chapman and co-host Sudhiksha Srinivasan, Assoc AIA. #PerkinsEastman #HumanByDesign #EducationDesign #SchoolDesign #Sustainability #Architecture #Design #AmericaByDesign

Perkins Eastman’s Nick Leahy, AIA, LEED AP, co-CEO and executive director, and Heather Jauregui, director of sustainability, sat down with Alison Kosik, CFEI during #ClimateWeekNYC as part of Acumen Media’s “SDG Leaders” video interview series, which brought together leading CEOs and sustainability experts from around the world to effect change and make a positive impact on people and the planet. The focus of this international campaign is to share how organizations are embedding the United Nations’ seventeen 17 sustainable development goals (#SDGs), climate change, and sustainability into the core of their operations. Perkins Eastman is proud to embed #sustainability into its culture and its design from day one, as Nick and Heather attest. “We as architects have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility in terms of the impact we have on people’s lives,” Heather says. “On the one side of things, we as humans spend over 90% of our lives indoors, so the physical environment really has a big impact on our daily lives: on our health and well-being, and our ability to perform and thrive. On the other side of the equation is thinking about the impact we have on the planet. Over 40% of the annual greenhouse gases that are emitted globally come from buildings—from the energy that’s consumed in order to run and operate these buildings, and from the materials that go into the construction of these buildings. Forty percent of the pie being under our responsibility is a big deal, so when we think about how we impact people and planet, those two things go in tandem for us.” Nick echoes her thoughts: “Climate change is daunting and challenging, but we see design as an important part of resolving that. I think we have to act now. As a firm, we are culturally aligning ourselves to be designing buildings that are restorative to the environment, that improve people’s quality of life, and are positive additions to the built environment. That’s what ‘Human by Design’ is really about.” Watch the full 13-minute video on CNBC now: https://lnkd.in/e7GzKUTK Big thanks to Acumen's Nicoleta Romanescu, Ben Spencer, Eloise McKenna, Katy Allan, Jan James Budden, and Constantin Pilavios. #PerkinsEastman #HumanByDesign #GoodDesignisSustainableDesign #SustainableDesign #ResilientDesign #Design #Architecture

The built environment is responsible for 40% of global CO₂ emissions, through the energy consumed from operating the buildings to the materials extracted to construct them. Planetary resources are finite, but human ingenuity is infinite, so is there an opportunity to design a way out of this climate crisis? We sat down with Co-CEO and Executive Director, Nick Leahy, AIA, LEED AP and Principal and Director of Sustainability, Heather Jauregui, to learn more about how Perkins Eastman strives to embed sustainability into its culture, with a team who integrate sustainable concepts holistically to maximise social, economic, and environmental value in their work and lives. The Acumen team Jan James Budden, Nicoleta Romanescu, Ben Spencer, Constantin Pilavios and Katy Allan thoroughly enjoyed bringing this project to life! Watch the full campaign next week on CNBC. #humanbydesign #holisitic #climatecrisis #sustainability
