PHEAL was created as a response to two crises: The COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed patterns of health inequities in communities already overburdened with health inequities, and the explosion of long-simmering racial tensions that occurred with the death of George Floyd. In May 2020, a group of 77 practitioners gathered to develop the PHEAL Principles as a call to action to respond to the health risks and racial injustice we see in our communities. This requires a fundamental shift in the power dynamics of community development and health. The PHEAL Principles serve as a tool for professionals and technical experts working in public, private, or non-profit organizations in built environment fields, including city planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, civil engineering, transportation, community development, real estate, parks and recreation, sustainability and resilience, green building, public health, and any others interested in the impact of the built environment on health outcomes. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱: "Planning for Health Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership is about more than data and policies. It’s about centering the lived experiences and voices of those most affected by inequities. We cannot simply plan from our offices, relying on an ocean of quantitative data, without truly understanding the everyday realities of the people we aim to serve. Genuine engagement, diverse perspectives, and building trusting relationships with communities are the pillars of this approach. True equity in planning means recognizing that those communities need to have a permanent seat at the decision-making table—not only as project participants but also as leaders and workforce members. One principle that resonates deeply with me is 'Meaningful Community Engagement'. In my experience, the best solutions come when we listen, learn, and co-create with the people living these experiences daily. As planners, we must recognize our own gaps in understanding and embrace the knowledge that comes from those who face the challenges firsthand. I invite planners and engineers to learn more about the PHEAL approach to planning and join the movement that prioritizes health equity at every level. If you're passionate about making a difference, consider joining the APA Health Equity and Planning Interest Group to be part of a growing community dedicated to reshaping how we plan for a healthier, more inclusive future." #transportationequity #transportationplanning

🌍 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 #𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 #𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀: 𝗔 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌳🏙️ It's worth revising this brilliant Global Public Space Toolkit developed by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) as it provides actionable and still up to date strategies to turn public spaces into vibrant, inclusive areas that boost urban development, social equity, and environmental sustainability. Let's summarize the content: 📊 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 & 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: - Cities with well-planned public spaces experience up to 20% higher economic growth through increased investment and property values. - Public spaces should occupy at least 30% of urban land, and streets should account for 18 km of street length per square km to ensure walkability and access. - A successful city should aim for 15,000 people per square km to ensure high density, supporting vibrant street life and reducing the reliance on cars. 💡 W𝗵𝘆 #𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 #𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿: - Environmental Impact: Green public spaces improve urban biodiversity, help mitigate climate change, and enhance air quality. - Community building: Public spaces are hubs of social interaction, creating a sense of identity and belonging while fostering civic engagement. - Economic benefits: Well-designed public spaces can boost local economies by attracting informal and formal businesses, raising property values, and generating income through tourism and events. 🌟 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: - Inclusive & accessible: Public spaces should be safe, welcoming, and open to all, especially women, children, the elderly, and marginalized communities. - Health & well-being: By encouraging walking, exercise, and play, public spaces are proven to reduce stress and improve physical and mental health. - Safety: Mixed-use and well-lit public areas can reduce crime and make cities safer for all residents. For cities looking to enhance quality of life, promote sustainability, and build stronger communities, the Global Public Space Toolkit offers a roadmap to success. Together, we can reimagine our urban landscapes! 💼🌳 Let's give credit to the authors:Pietro Garau, Nayoka Martinez-Bäckström, Cecilia Andersson Download it from here: https://lnkd.in/dmqn4d3c #PublicSpaces #UrbanPlanning #SustainableCities #UNHabitat #CivicEngagement #InclusiveCities
