We’re in Barcelona for the Smart City Expo World Congress. Maria Tsavachidis, CEO of EIT Urban Mobility, begins day one by reflecting on the flash floods that have tragically impacted the Valencia region. Maria says that the extreme weather events that we have seen in Spain, in Central Eastern Europe months before, and all across the world are a clear signal that cities must take bold action to combat climate change. A Cost and Benefits study from EIT Urban Mobility found that readily available innovations can reduce emissions by 21% by 2030. However, this is not enough to reach the 50% reduction needed to curb climate change. “We need stringent policies and new solutions and research. We need to take action and this is the perfect place to start.”

🌍 Kicking-off Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress 2024! 🚉✨ As we inaugurate this year’s congress here in Barcelona, the recent tragedy in Valencia—where the DANA storm claimed over two hundred lives—reminds us of the urgency of our mission. Climate change is making extreme weather events devastatingly common, underscoring the need for resilient, low-emission cities. Our recent study reveals that to meet EU Green Deal targets by 2050, €1.5 trillion must be invested in sustainable mobility. Despite the high costs, the benefits—including lower CO2 emissions, better public health, and reduced external costs—greatly surpass the investments. This initiative aims to foster safer, climate-resilient urban environments for all. ➡️ Join us at Booth D190 in Hall 2 and in the many congress sessions and startups pitch we’ve set up to explore key topics in mobility. The energy and commitment of cities, innovators, and industry leaders here give me hope. As only together, we can create a future-ready, resilient world. Let’s #MoveBetter. #UrbanMobility #ClimateAction #cities Ugo Valenti Delphine Romeu Bernadette Bergsma

𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮, 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 (𝟯𝟬, 𝟭𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰). The heartbreaking images of the DANA storm devastation in eastern and southern Spain remind us of the urgent need for action. With over 95 lives already lost and rescue efforts still underway, this disaster is now one of Spain’s largest ‘natural’ catastrophe of the last century; leaving behind profound human, environmental, and economic impacts. But calling this 'natural' isn't fully accurate. This event reflects what we’re seeing globally: climate change intensifying the frequency and severity of natural disasters, leaving cities and their people increasingly vulnerable. A horrific storm brought on by warming Mediterranean waters and an overheated atmosphere has turned extreme weather into a terrifying reality. The numbers speak for themselves. In 2023—considered the hottest year in history—climate-related disasters already claimed 74,000 lives worldwide. The economic impact is similarly staggering: according to the European Environment Agency, the EU has faced €738 billion in damages over the past four decades due to weather-related extremes, with 22% of these costs incurred in 2021 and 2023 alone. On this #WorldCitiesDay, we remember the lives lost, and acknowledge the urgency of reshaping our cities into resilient, climate-ready environments that are capable of withstanding tomorrow's challenges.
