Some scaly new team members are slithering into Piedmont Wildlife Center! Meet Broccoli the Eastern Rat Snake and Marble the Corn Snake, our newest Ambassador Animals. Broccoli (Image 1) joined us in 2024 after a community member spotted her at a Repticon event in Raleigh. Originally caught in the act of stealing quail eggs, she couldn’t be kept by the vendor and was brought to the event for sale. When our community member asked if we could give her a home, we gave an enthusiastic “yes”—and they generously donated Broccoli to join our team. Marble (Image 2) arrived this summer when her owners needed to rehome her. Gentle and curious, her pleasant personality makes her a wonderful Ambassador, helping us educate the public on the vital roles corn snakes and other native snakes play in the wild. Let’s give a warm welcome to both Ambassadors!

We’re proud to share that our Autumn Adventures Online Auction raised $4,458! Whether you placed a bid, made a donation, or cheered us on, your support means so much. 🤗 Here’s how the funds will make an impact at Piedmont Wildlife Center: 🌱 $2,825 covers the costs of dumpsters used to clear out our cabin and carriage house prior to our move within Leigh Farm Park. 🌱 $1,033 helps offset the costs of sheds we built to store equipment and supplies, allowing us to move our Eastern Box Turtle Ambassadors indoors for the winter. 🌱 $500 covers wellness exam fees for 10 of our Ambassador Animals. 🌱 $100 covers the cost of new smoke alarms. Thank you for believing in us and supporting our mission. Your support empowers us to keep moving forward, more resilient and committed than ever to connecting our community with nature through outdoor education, animal programs, and wildlife research.

This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight Jenna Williams, our Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator at Piedmont Wildlife Center! With a Bachelor’s in Zoology and a Master’s in Biology, Jenna has held multiple roles at PWC. She joined the organization in 2019 as a Fall Intern and has since served as a Raptor Care Volunteer and Conservation Assistant. In her current position, which she began in August 2024, Jenna manages PWC's volunteer program and organizes our outreach events. When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Jenna shared, “I love seeing the love for nature blossom in our community, especially when introducing someone to a snake or opossum and watching their fear transform into wonder.” Outside of work, you can find Jenna reading, spending time with her husband and pets, playing video games, or participating in STARFLEET International activities. As for her favorite Ambassador Animal? It's a tough choice, but she has a soft spot for both Wilbur and Basil!

Your donations, including bids in our Autumn Adventures Online Auction, support various needs at Piedmont Wildlife Center. They help offset expenses from our necessary move out of the cabin, which previously served as our office, to temporary accommodations within Leigh Farm Park. Our Conservation Team is now based in a trailer with limited space, and to bring our Eastern Box Turtles indoors from their outdoor enclosure for the winter, we needed to purchase and construct a shed for storing equipment and supplies. By participating in the auction or otherwise donating, you’re helping us recoup essential costs, allowing us to continue doing what we love—caring for our wildlife ambassadors and educating our community on wildlife conservation.
