The most advanced open-source distributed SQL database for modern, high-demand applications.
About us
Founded in 2015, TiDB was born from the vision of three talented software engineers who set out to build a database system that would be more scalable and reliable than MySQL, while retaining its rich ecosystem of tools and frameworks. They also wanted a true open-source solution, ensuring flexibility and compatibility. What they didn’t know then was how TiDB would grow to become one of the world’s most popular distributed SQL databases. With over 33,000 GitHub stars, TiDB is the leading open-source distributed SQL database, designed to power modern applications with relentless elasticity, versatility, and reliability. Today, TiDB is trusted by world-renowned organizations such as Databricks, Block, Pinterest, and Catalyst to handle their most critical workloads, allowing developers to innovate faster and focus on building features rather than managing infrastructure. Powered by PingCAP, TiDB continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in data management. With support from leading firms like Sequoia Capital, GGV Capital, Access Technology Ventures, and Coatue Management, TiDB is on a mission to empower developers worldwide to distribute their data with speed, agility, and scale.

I had a fantastic time interviewing Ed Huang, CTO and Co-Founder of TiDB, powered by PingCAP, on The Ravit Show at their vibrant office in Plug and Play, Sunnyvale. We dove deep into the origins of TiDB, the journey behind building a MySQL-compatible, open-source database, and the milestones reached since. Here are some highlights from our conversation: 🔹 The Start of PingCAP and TiDB I asked Ed to take us back to the beginning—what inspired him to build PingCAP and develop TiDB from scratch? His response was a compelling story about solving real-world database challenges that continue to resonate with enterprises today. 🔹 The Decision to Focus on MySQL Compatibility Ed shared why PingCAP chose to build on MySQL, a choice that has been pivotal to their approach and strategy. 🔹 The Open Source Choice From the start, PingCAP chose to open source TiDB—a bold move that has shaped their growth. Ed reflected on this decision and the impact it’s had, especially as many database providers pivot away from open source today. 🔹 9 Years and Counting Ed’s role as CTO has evolved over the years, but his passion for coding remains—rumor has it, he's still coding! We discussed his hands-on approach and how it impacts PingCAP’s innovation. 🔹 TiDB’s Gen AI Partnerships With new partnerships in the Generative AI space, TiDB is forging ahead with its AI-driven future. Ed shared exciting updates about their Gen AI story and the solutions they’re crafting for today’s complex data challenges. 🔹 On the Horizon What’s next for PingCAP and TiDB? Ed offered a sneak peek, including an upcoming paper on TiDB Serverless, which promises to redefine scalability and flexibility for database users. A big thank you to Ed and the PingCAP team for the warm welcome and insightful conversation. 🙌 Looking forward to seeing TiDB’s next chapter! #data #ai #tidb #pingcap #theravitshow
