Pioneer Alumni Ambassador Angelica, from Indonesia, participated in a Pioneer research concentration that allowed her to explore two of her interests, biology and environmental studies. Angelica found her Pioneer experience to be transformational. She defines a transformational experience as one that “helped her as a learner and helped her become a critical thinker.” She improved a lot for her English writing skills and ultimately produced an independent ten-page-long research paper. #PioneerAcademics #Transformation #Research

Pioneer scholar Audrey, from Denver, Colorado, in the US, is one of the few scholars who have participated in Pioneer twice. Until her first Pioneer experience, Audrey had concentrated on STEM subjects in high school. However, she chose Pioneer in part because of the large selection of research concentrations, and was happy that her STS (Science, Technology, and Society) concentration allowed her to do research in the humanities as well. In fact, although her specific research topics were quite different, both explored the relationship between the technological capabilities of online media and self-esteem. Audrey’s first research topic had to do with autocomplete algorithms, and the sexist and racist biases they reveal. She spent hours typing the same words into several different search engines, and recording what the algorithms suggested for completing such beginnings as “Asian people are…” Some of them are stereotypical, some demeaning, she says, remembering words such as “smart” and “unathletic.” She learned that algorithms can even change their recommendations based on the location of the user, which they can determine from the IP address, and make suggestions that perpetuate stereotypes in different areas. Audrey’s second research concentration was focused on body image and the media. Audrey did her research on male body image, because she had noted that many of her male school friends were self-objectifying as much as female teenagers, spending a great deal of time looking at gym centric media and being concerned about their own body shape. She found the topic was not well researched, so she enlisted participants to complete an online survey that she designed, and then analyzed the results. Audrey says that her Pioneer experiences were a great influence on her choice of college. She will be attending Princeton, in large part “because of all of the research opportunities available.” In the video, Audrey describes how her international cohort became friends through sharing the different ways they thought and did things in their different cultures.
