The goals of a contractor and a locator are not the same. As Mike Parilac and Jemmie Wang say, the job of the locator is to prevent at fault damages. While it's still small, the flexibility a locator has in their accuracy can be taken advantage of in order to increase efficiency. Putting all the pressure on the contractor, who doesn't want to hit anything period. Shout out to all of the locators who decide to go the extra mile, and establish good communication with the contractor!

"Sometimes, taking a little bit longer is not a bad thing" SHANE HART A great discussion with Mat Taylor, Dan Rest and Saul L Lopez, MSEM talking about the OUC process and how it's revolutionized damage prevention in the city of Chicago. Competers Inc. Meade HBK Engineering, LLC Pipe View America

Who is that??? It’s just the guy responsible for making Chicago the #1 city of the United States in damage prevention! Jai Kalayil runs the OUC (Office of Underground Coordination)in Chicago, which is in unlike any other city or state in the country. Over 30 utility members submit their projects to them before anything happens. That way the City of Chicago can manage existing infrastructure, and avoid tearing up streets multiple times a year. To put it shortly… Seems like a no brainer, right? But no, Chicago is the only city like this. Also has achieved the 50 in 5 goal over the last 4 years and counting. Video coming soon!!!!!

Mike Parilac brings up one of our favorite hypotheticals we like to ask people here at Planet Underground. Starting next year, what if the one-call system no longer existed? How would contractors react? Jemmie Wang has an optimistic approach, saying that contractors will find a way to get things done. Not sure how contractors feel about this, but maybe it would be better for them. Some believe the current one-call system can sometimes be a crutch for contractors. The system is outdated, and not always fair because they seem to get burned the most. Would removing the one-call process for contractors make things easier for them, or would it be a nightmare?

3 homes in the U.S. were obliterated last year from a result of underground utility strikes. All 3 were gas explosions. Two cats died in these explosions, but by some miracle no people were killed. However, one adult and a child suffered critical injuries, and their lives may never be the same again. 1. Susquehanna, Pennsylvania 2. Woodstock, Illinois 3. Wappingers Falls, New York I'm sure the people of those cities won't ever think the same way about underground utility construction again, especially next time it comes to town. From the families who lived next door, the school across the street (miraculously was on holiday that day), to the people who barely survived- Everyone will be on alert for the rest of their lives. No matter who was at fault, these things are always preventable, and we believe more men and women working in the underground utility construction industry need to understand what is at risk if they don't already. Before it's too late. Join our sponsors and help spread damage prevention awareness so we can all go home to our families safe and sound!
