Yesterday, DiverSea hosted an insightful internal webinar on marine citizen science, bringing together experts to discuss its significance and evolving role in ocean conservation.   Sedef Korkmaz (AKD) provided an overview of citizen science, exploring its definition, types, and the progress of stakeholder engagement, with a special focus on DiverSea’s contributions.   Maiken Bjørkan & Liz Morris-Webb (Nordlandsforskning AS - Nordland Research Institute) presented key insights into European marine citizen science trends, referencing their work on the Horizon Europe project PREP4BLUE and its "Engaging Citizens with Mission Ocean and Waters" toolbox. Glaucia Fragoso (NTNU) introduced PlanktoScope, demonstrating how citizen science is being effectively integrated into marine research within DiverSea.   This event was organized by european Horizon project "DiverSea - Integrated Observation, Mapping, Monitoring and Prediction for Functional Biodiversity of Coastal Seas" WP5 Citizen Science Team Akdeniz Koruma Derneği, LPN - Liga para a Protecção da Natureza, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU). Thanks to the PlanktoScope, countless plankton species were observed during the expedition led by Pacifique. It's also a real delight to see art drawing inspiration from the scientific world, as witnessed in Geneva during the engraving workshop by Katharina Kreil and Cécile Koepfli, centered around plankton. It was such a joy to demonstrate the PlanktoScope along with the new Foldscope Instruments, Inc. in the fantastic Glasgow Botanic Gardens thanks to the Museum of Microalgae (microalgaemuseum.com). Unveiling the mesmerizing world of microalgae—these tiny yet inspiring and stunningly beautiful organisms. The event showcased a diverse range of initiatives, each more captivating than the last. The evening itself was equally enriching, surrounded by a community of passionate scientists who truly embody the spirit of exploration and discovery. It was a privilege to be in such inspiring company!
