This weekend, Funding the Commons SF takes place inside one of the most important hubs for digital preservation—the Internet Archive. Beyond being a venue, it’s a living record of human knowledge, culture, and innovation. Here’s why it matters: 🏛 1923 – Originally built as a Christian Science church, today it houses one of the world’s largest digital archives. 🌐 1996 – Founded by brewster kahle, a computer engineer on a mission to back up the internet and make knowledge freely accessible. 💾 2001 – The Wayback Machine launched, now holding 850+ billion web pages. Led by Mark Graham, it preserves internet history before it disappears. 📼 2009 – Started archiving entire TV news broadcasts, ensuring a permanent, searchable record of history as it aired. 📝 2014 – Vitalik Buterin wrote parts of the Ethereum whitepaper here, shaping the foundations of decentralized technology. 🪙 2017 – Became an early adopter of crypto philanthropy, accepting ETH, BTC, and ZEC to fund open knowledge. 📀 2020 – Hit 70 petabytes of stored data, preserving everything from rare books to NASA images, vintage video games, and entire digital libraries.
