PNWA is a non-profit, non-partisan trade association supporting navigation, energy, trade, and economic development.

About us

The Pacific Northwest Waterways Association has been a non-profit, non-partisan collaboration of ports, barge companies, steamship operators, farmers, terminals, union labor, forest products manufacturers, utilities, irrigation districts, and public agencies throughout Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. PNWA’s members work together to advocate for navigation, energy, trade and environmental restoration and stewardship throughout the region. Established in 1934, as the Inland Empire Waterways Association, PNWA’s first act was to petition President Roosevelt and Congress for funds to secure a navigation lock at Bonneville Dam. PNWA then led the way for Congressional authorization and funding to build the remaining seven navigation locks and dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. In 1971 we expanded, adding Puget Sound and coastal members to provide a comprehensive regional perspective. Our membership has grown to include public ports, tug and barge companies, steamship operators, grain elevator operators, agricultural producers, forest products manufacturers, electric utilities, irrigation districts, other businesses, public agencies, and individuals For 90 years, PNWA has ensured that our waterways are efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable.

Talk nerdy to me! Not only does this graph show increases in fish returns over time, it also clearly visualizes the cyclical nature of salmon returns influenced by ocean conditions, specifically something called the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Scientists and anglers have long known that the ebb and flow of ocean temperatures and their cascading effects on the food web directly impact salmon. But what's concerning is that, according to NOAA earlier this year, conditions in ocean waters that Columbia River salmon call home for most of their lives, is "unsettled" https://lnkd.in/dhBDaDtT

The more than 1.7 million salmon and steelhead that have returned to the Columbia River this season and the uptick in returns in the 1990s reflect a correlation between federal fish and wildlife mitigation efforts that started more than 40 years ago. BPA is proud of the work we fund with tribes, states and other non-governmental organizations across the PNW that benefit multiple species. The recent extension of the fall Chinook salmon fishing season announced by ODF&W is additional evidence these efforts are making a positive difference. https://lnkd.in/ep9e9C8u

We were thrilled to welcome the team from Clark County Public Health for a tour of Tidewater’s Vancouver terminal and container yard! Since 1992, we’ve proudly partnered with the county to barge Clark County’s municipal solid waste. Each week, Tidewater loads and transports approximately five barges, each carrying 60 containers of compacted solid waste, to Boardman, Oregon where the containers are then taken to Waste Connection's Finley Buttes Landfill. Tidewater is proud to play a role in sustainable waste management for our community. A big thank you to the Clark County Public Health team for visiting and exploring how our services support this shared commitment to a cleaner future!

Thank you again to Congresswoman Jayapal for her continued support of our zero-emission truck transition! This year the Congresswoman secured an additional $850,000 to support our transition to zero emission trucking, helping to develop charging infrastructure sites for the almost 5,000 trucks that call our gateway. #trucks #zeroemission #infrastructure

Did you know the lower Snake River dams are among the most advanced and well-maintained dams on the West Coast? According to the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association, these dams ensure the safe passage of over 95% of the fish that navigate through them. We all rely on these dams whether it be for irrigation, reliable hydroelectric power, and/or effective transportation of crops. #UnitedGrain #SnakeRiver #SnakeRiverDams #TheMoreYouKnow

Exciting News from Tidewater Transportation and Terminals! On Friday, Tidewater celebrated the ribbon cutting of our new Biofuel & Renewable Diesel Distribution Facility at our Snake River Terminal (SRT) in Pasco, WA! This project marks a huge step forward in expanding clean energy access across the Pacific Northwest, thanks to a $3.1 million grant from USDA’s Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP). The grant supports our mission to bring biodiesel to central and eastern Washington, Oregon, and northern Idaho. We were honored to have U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse, USDA Rural Business-Cooperative Service Administrator Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, and representatives from Senator Maria Cantwell and Senator Ron Wyden’s offices at the event. The presence of these leaders underscores the significance of this investment in our community and region. At Tidewater, we’re committed to making a difference. Our expanded facility can now blend over 2 million gallons of biodiesel per month, providing a reliable, renewable energy source that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with regional clean fuel programs. With multi-modal access to truck, rail, barge, and pipeline, the Snake River Terminal will be an essential hub for distributing clean energy solutions across the Northwest. Thank you to the USDA, our Pacific Northwest congressional delegation, and our hardworking team members who made this project possible. Together, we’re fueling a sustainable future and building a resilient tomorrow!
