The Port keeps Washington state connected through aviation, maritime, logistics, trade, and travel services

About us

Founded in 1911, the Port owns and operates Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Fishermen’s Terminal — home of the North Pacific fishing fleet — and public marinas. The Port also owns two cruise ship terminals, a grain terminal, real estate assets, and marine cargo terminals through its partnership in the Northwest Seaport Alliance. Port operations help support nearly 200,000 jobs and $7 billion in wages throughout the region. Over the next 19 years, the port’s “Century Agenda” seeks to create an additional 100,000 jobs through economic growth while becoming the nation’s leading green and energy-efficient port.

Starting this month, all tenants at SEA Airport who provide food service must now use only reusable or approved compostable food service ware and packaging. This includes restaurants with sit-down service, tenants with to-go service, lounges, and catering groups. This new requirement now eliminates plastic and plastic-lined service ware in favor of certified compostable alternatives. The initiative will help capture more food waste for composting, ease sorting confusion for travelers, and prevent food-contaminated products from ending up in the wrong place. Existing efforts have already led to 1,394 tons of waste being collected for composting in 2023 alone. That’s a third of the waste SEA diverts from landfill each year, and these changes will push that figure higher. In support of our goal to divert 60% of all terminal waste from landfills, we’re working with tenants to ensure all non-compostable products like cups, bowls, and utensils are replaced by approved products.

The next time the temperatures drop, three SEA Airport snowplows will hit the airfield debuting a new look and new names. The new names — Sno Bro, Powder Pup, and Snow Dragon — were selected through a contest held for third-grade students in Highline Public Schools. More than 180 individual entries were submitted by students. The winners were selected by our snow team who operate the snowplows and are responsible for snow and ice maintenance of runways, taxiways, and the ramp areas. Read more → https://lnkd.in/gJaFeatC

We want SEA Airport to be welcoming, safe, and comfortable for everyone. Creating a welcoming place for all means updating spaces to make travel easier and more convenient. One of the most important stops on your airport journey will probably be a restroom. The Restroom Renovation Project is underway on the B, C, and D concourses to modernize these important spaces with lighter and brighter designs and improve accessibility. Here’s what’s making SEA restrooms accessible and welcoming for all travelers.

Major construction has begun on the Maritime Innovation Center on the grounds of Fishermen’s Terminal. The historic Ship Supply Building, constructed in 1916, will be modernized into a 15,000 square foot facility featuring work, fabrication, and event space for new business incubators and anchor tenants. This beautiful and modern facility will be on the cutting-edge of sustainability. The Port and architects at The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP are designing the facility to meet the world’s strictest green building certification, the Living Building Challenge. This week was the 75th anniversary of SEA Airport on July 9. The celebrations began on Tuesday when Commissioners introduced a proclamation recognizing this major milestone. Festivities continued throughout the week with activations for travelers at the airport, a gathering for our tenant and community partners, and recognition events for airport staff. This Saturday, July 13, we’ll celebrate at The Museum of Flight with a screening of our airport mini-documentaries and an aviation panel featuring current and former airport directors. Lastly, we’ll be at the annual Olde Burien Block Party hosted by Discover Burien on July 20. Our Port of Seattle Police and Fire departments will be joining us and there will be lots of family-friendly activities.

Now in its 25th year of cruises between Seattle and Alaska, cruise tourism has become a significant part of the local economy, contributing to hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs, and bringing nearly $900 million to the region in economic impact, bolstering small, local businesses like Seattle-based Jamie Slye Hats + Accessories. Over the 2023 and 2024 Alaska cruise seasons, Slye forged new connections that have boosted her business. Many cruise passengers found their way into her shop before or after their cruise, and she secured a partnership with Holland America Line to bring her hats into its Denali National Park shops in Alaska. Traditionally, hat shops like Slye’s are a destination for people who have researched the shop in advance. But Slye said tourists and cruise passengers have resulted in another type of customer. “A lot of people just walking past were very surprised to see a hat shop, and also were very happy to see one because they realized that they would actually be able to use a hat for their travels,” Slye said.
