70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory tests. Over the past 3 years, I have seen many testing companies come to market then disappear overnight. I even carried a Ferritin Point-of-Sell test kit in my pharmacy and the company ceased to exist almost as fast as they rolled in. This is alarming and we do need more oversight especially in this direct to consumer market. Some of the kits I’ve came across lately are being sponsored by influencers who are famous for being famous. They have ZERO medical background! What this tells me is there is a huge healthcare void and patients are trying to take matters into their own hands. As pharmacists, we have an opportunity to step in and help patients who are searching for answers to their health and provide guidance along with laboratory interpretation aka consultations. We also have the responsibility to work with labs who are looking out for the best interests of the patients. This means the lab should be open and eager to collaborate with you as a provider.
