Are immigrants bad for the #USA? Aside from Native Americans, all Americans have immigrant roots. However, some U.S. politicians have used divisive tactics to blame immigrants for various issues unfairly. These harmful narratives can endanger the lives of immigrants. Let's not forget about the immigration ban (the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882) and the 1871 massacre that killed 19 in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. As a proud U.S. citizen who immigrated to the country in 1981, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to use my voice to urge others to speak up against hate. I want to give a special shoutout to Jeff Bailey for helping me refine my thoughts and connect with the Los Angeles Times. I’m also incredibly grateful to Josh Gohlke for his brilliant edits on my piece, which was published today. In this piece, I highlight the value that immigrants have provided to this country. I urge you to spread the positives to counterbalance the negatives. Interestingly, I’ve already received one hate mail. This only underscores the importance of this article. Enjoyed moderating an interesting panel on advancing the scale and impact of IS research in top journals with Alok Gupta, Andrew Burton-Jones, Subodha Kumar at recently held CIST in Seattle. Andrew discussed the three worlds of research and the need to be pragmatic and holistic in following evidence-based practices from science of science in journal and editorial/review processes. Alok emphasized the strengths of IS in new topics and methods urging the importance of getting involved in our own institutions, collaborate with other disciplines, and also consider other outlets such as IEEE, ACM etc. Subodha provided insightful discussion of how the Editors and EIC Kalyan Singhal at the POM journal of Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) scaled while maintaining quality and rigor with significant interdisciplinarity and openness to emerging domains and methods. Hopefully some of the great ideas and discussions will see follow-up conversations, and actions by the members and stakeholders of Association for Information Systems, Informs-ISS and other related communities. HOCM is thrilled to share recent work on diversity and inclusion in humanitarian operations as part of our #HumOpsPapers series. We are featuring the work of Wiljeana Glover, Ph.D., Zhi Li, and Dessislava Pachamanova, the authors of the paper, "Framing Inclusive Practice Options for Financial, Operational, and Community Outcomes"(https://lnkd.in/dajERE2p). The authors report: We propose a new framework called Inclusive Practice Options (IPO). It helps small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) analyze whether and how they can serve customers from all economic backgrounds while staying financially healthy. Serving vulnerable customers could boost a business's financial stability under certain conditions. Being inclusive could be good for business too. Our interest in this topic was sparked by talking to SME owners, especially in healthcare - think clinic owners and practitioners. SMEs have traditionally contributed to the economic and social fabric of their communities, but also may experience, on average, financial instability, lower profits and ultimately lower survival rates in their efforts to serve a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds in part because they do not focus on the effectiveness of their processes. There's a common belief that serving lower-income customers is less profitable. But we thought this might not be the whole story, especially when you look at the bigger picture of how the resources of a small business are used to service customers and how predictable the outcomes are. So, we created a framework that could help these businesses weigh their options more thoroughly. This paper, which is part of a special issue of Production and Operations Management on DEI, introduces "community lift" as a new dimension to consider alongside financial performance and operational fairness to evaluate an SME’s resource allocation. This gives organizations a comprehensive picture of how serving diverse customers impacts them. We showed how businesses can create models to balance these priorities. Our framework also provides a structured way for SMEs to make inclusive operational strategy decisions. 🌟 Excited to Share My Latest Publication in Operations Management! 🌟 I am thrilled to share my experience gained while building the OM Department at JSOM literally from scratch. The article “Building an Operations Management Department from Nowhere to Here (1996–2023): Lessons Learned,” appeared in the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) journal. I hope the deans and department heads may learn from the experience gained at the Jindal School. This article describes the rapid upward march to research excellence of the Operations Management Department in the Naveen Jindal School of Management from 1996 to 2023. It reflects along the way on the internal strategy, as well as the institutional and external contributing factors that led to its phenomenal growth Reflecting on the journey and the invaluable lessons learned over nearly three decades of building and nurturing an Operations Management department, it has been a remarkable experience, filled with challenges, growth, and countless rewarding moments. It was a privilege to be included in panel of editors (of academic journals adjacent to the field of Information Systems) at the 2024 Conference on Information Systems & Technology (CIST) in Seattle yesterday. As editors, we focused on providing guidance to Information Systems scholars for submitting their research to our journals. The takeaways were as follows: (1) Ensure that your paper answers questions that are paramount for each of the adjacent fields; (2) Ensure that you situate your paper as much as possible in the literature of the adjacent field, including positioning/writing in a style consistent with that field as well including the relevant citations; (3) Showcase how your work complements and enhances the scholarship in the adjacent field and (4) Find the appropriate balance between relevance and rigor for your work using the research published in the adjacent field as a guide. It was a great session - thanks to Param Vir Singh for conceptualizing/moderating it and to Abhay Mishra & Terence Saldanha for making it run smoothly. It was very helpful for me (as the incoming Editor-in-Chief of #MarketingScience) as well as I learnt a lot from my co-panelists (Dennis Zhang at #OperationsResearch, Sharique H. at #OrganizationScience & Subodha Kumar at #ProductionandOperationsManagament - the latter two were on Zoom).
