Delve into our interactive “Live Emotion” gallery to explore some of the most iconic venues across sport, live performances and other major global events from the past 40 years. Our unique design history has acted as the backdrop for much bigger stories and moments — those of community, sustainability and passion — for four decades and counting. As we commemorate this milestone, we want to say thank you and celebrate with you, the individuals across the world who fill these venues with the emotion that gives them meaning. Designed by Populous in partnership with Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi, the spectacular 115,000-capacity Stade Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco, will be the largest football stadium in the world.   This iconic stadium will be fully compliant for all FIFA competitions, with the ability to host the final at the FIFA World Cup 2030, following Morocco’s naming as joint hosts for the tournament alongside Spain and Portugal. It will also serve as the home of two local clubs.   Its striking design draws inspiration from the traditional social gathering of Morocco known as a ‘moussem’. The vast stadium bowl and a series of lush botanic gardens are set under a grand tented roof made from a unique aluminium lattice, that emerges as a dramatic intervention in the forested landscape.   Read more about the project:  https://lnkd.in/esNkFeA2

What is the most elevated purpose of a community? This could be answered in myriad ways, but is best expressed through a single word — belonging. In "The Community at Large: How We Plan for Belonging," Riki Nishimura, AIA, principal and senior urban designer, explains how we utilize our vast research and experience to create places where live, work and play communities coexist by design: https://bit.ly/3Aq1qPr

More than ever, Olympic host cities are committed to keeping financial costs and environmental impacts as low as possible. Having worked on every Summer Olympics since 1996, Populous is leading the way by designing temporary venues and repurposing existing venues. Paris 2024 is the best example yet of this approach. In this story from the latest issue of our magazine, we explore how sustainability is driving a transformation in staging the Olympic Games. https://bit.ly/46DVMVC

The Populous-designed Accor Stadium (formerly Stadium Australia) is a beloved and iconic venue whose history goes back to the Sydney 2000 ‘Green Games’. As with any facility, it has been upgraded over the years to suit the changing times. In 2018, the New South Wales government sought redevelopment plans for the major transition of the stadium from an oval to a rectangular format to enhance the experience for Rugby Union, Rugby League and Soccer. The Populous team, led by Chris Paterson and Al Baxter, worked with Maffeis and Aurecon to address this design challenge, embracing the opportunity to adapt an existing iconic stadium to better serve a new sports and fan experience. To do this, the team harnessed the potential of a ‘hidden’ structural element that made the design possible. To find out more about this hidden element and learn more about this project, please click on this article — the result of a conversation between Dr. Kavita Gonsalves, Sustainability Design Lead for Populous APAC, and Al Baxter, Populous Senior Principal and project lead architect, about the Stadium Australia Redevelopment project. Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous people are the guardians of traditions and the custodians of the lands that carry stories older than time itself. Their cultures, languages and rituals are a testament to the human capacity for creativity, adaptation and the ability to harmoniously coexist with nature. Indigenous architecture embodies principals of sustainability, community and deep respect for the natural environment. From the intricate patterns of Native American pueblos, to the innovative cooling systems of traditional African huts and the stilt houses of Southeast Asia, these designs showcase innovative solutions that have stood the test of time. As we strive to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and meaningful, let’s look to Indigenous practices for inspiration. We are proud to showcase projects such as Wiigulga Sports Complex, Te Kaha Stadium, , BMO Centre and FNB Stadium as examples of the inspiring inclusive and considered design that takes place at Populous. Let us honour this day by taking a moment to learn more about indigenous cultures, engage in meaningful conversations and deepen our understanding of the lands and communities in which we work.
