Om os
BIG is a Copenhagen, New York, London, Barcelona, Shenzhen, Los Angeles, Oslo, and Zurich-based group of architects, designers, builders, and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, interior design, landscape design, product design, research and development. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. We believe that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism. Like a form of programmatic alchemy we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping. By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms. BIG is committed to supporting its new parents and their families, and is a proud member of Pledge Parental Leave. While on leave, BIGsters will continue to receive all employee benefits previously provided including health insurance and will remain eligible for salary increases and bonuses, as well as 52 weeks of job security. We offer 18 weeks of total paid leave in addition to accrued vacation to extend the paid leave for primary caregivers, and 4 weeks paid leave for secondary caregivers.

Led by BIG Partner Leon Rost - a California native - our L.A. studio is located a few blocks from the beach in Santa Monica, joining BIG’s global studios in Copenhagen, New York, London, Barcelona, Shenzhen, Zurich, and Oslo. "The search for our new home in L.A. followed the pursuits that often define our work - connection to nature, water, and sky, as well as to city, history, and community. We found it all in this gem, a 1928 building in Santa Monica designed by legendary architect Paul Williams. As a Japanese Californian I am excited to root BIG on the Pacific Coast. In the city of storytelling, big dreams, and a pioneer spirit, I am certain L.A. will be a fertile frontier for continued experimentation. You could say BIG - though born in Copenhagen - has always been an Angeleno at heart." - Leon Rost, Partner, BIG Read more about the studio here: https://loom.ly/ZpMt_fM Our L.A. team hopes to see you soon! #BIGArchitecture #BIGLA #SantaMonica #FutureofWork #Workspace #OfficeDesign #OfficeInteriors #Office

BIG LA celebrates the topping out of one of its first projects, the Claremont McKenna College Robert Day Sciences Center! 🔬🧬 Swing by our Santa Monica studio to meet the BIG LA team and explore future collaborations! The 135,000 sq ft Sciences Center will be home to the liberal arts school’s next-generation Kravis Department of Integrated Sciences - a powerful, multi-disciplinary, computational approach to advance gene, brain and climate knowledge. The structure is designed as stacks of paired volumes, or rectangular ‘blocks’ - two per floor - with each pair rotated 45 degrees from the floor below. On the interior, the volumes are expressed as stacked trusses with floor-to-ceiling glass partitions providing visibility between spaces. The rotation of each floor creates a central sky-lit atrium at the heart of the building that provides direct views into classrooms and research spaces from all levels. Roughly 9,000 sq ft of solar panels on the roof will provide 200-230 megawatt hours of energy production per year. The project is aiming for LEED Gold and is expected to complete in 2025. Congratulations to all of our collaborators on this exciting milestone! We’re excited to unveil our design for NOT A HOTEL Setouchi, located on the serene Sagi Island in Japan! 🌊🏝️ Set to break ground later this year, NOT A HOTEL's newest resort will feature three villas that weave through the 30,000 m2 site like a ribbon, with panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. Building on the longstanding dialogue between Scandinavian and Japanese design values, the remote island retreat incorporates local materials - including Japanese black slate, wood and rammed earth - and a strong connection to nature. “Our design approach for NOT A HOTEL Setouchi wasn’t about imposing our ideas on the site; instead, it involved exploring, observing and understanding the landscape. We envisioned how to best leverage this distinctive and remarkable terrain and fixed upon a design that mirrors the elegance of traditional Japanese architecture. Japan is one of the cultures in the world where commitment to craft and care for quality remains intact. The honesty and simplicity of the structure and careful choice of materials can be said to have greatly influenced the traditional architecture of Japan and the modern architecture of Denmark. Maybe that's why when I go to Japan, I always feel like I'm coming home. NOT A HOTEL Setouchi will be an experiment in what happens when the sensibilities of both countries come together – the Danish desire for simplicity and the care and perfection of Japan." - Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG 📷 Mir + LIT design #Arup 1Moku Landscape Design and Research #BOCS #MAEDACorporation #NOSIGHT #NOTAHOTEL #Japan #Setouchi #travel #BIGArchitecture #BIGLON #BIGNYC #BIGLA

The 2023 International Horticultural Expo Pavilion for the UAE, designed by BIG Landscape, is recognized for its material use, innovative landscape design, and plant species selection🌱 The Pavilion is constructed of rammed earth, framing a series of exhibition galleries and 32 gardens planted with 65 species and 6,609 plants. Designed to showcase the region's environmental preservation and agricultural innovation, the 450 m2 Pavilion is inspired by the deep roots and intertwined branches of the drought resistant Ghaf tree. The Pavilion is conceived as a dome-shape, emerging from the earth, gradually rising towards its center and framing polygonal-shaped spaces and gardens to create a maze-like exhibition experience that draws the visitors into its folds. 📸 Shoayb Khattab Photography & Seeing Things UAE Pavilion at Expo ATELIER BRÜCKNER #RammedEarth #Pavilion #InternationalHorticulturalExpo #BIGLandscape #UAEatExpo #UAEPavilion #UAENurturingLegacy

We've joined forces with KU School of Architecture & Design (ArcD) to design the school’s new studio space - a mass timber structure nicknamed the Makers' Kube - in collaboration with BNIM and StructureCraft! 🪵🏫 Designed in direct response to the needs and wishes of the school’s 1,300+ students, faculty and board, the 50,000 sq ft, 6-story Makers’ KUbe features a distinct timber diagrid frame optimized to reduce material and carbon-intensive concrete. The Makers’ KUbe will connect to the existing Marvin and Chalmers Halls via winter garden bridges, consolidating all of the school’s programs into these three buildings. “Our design for the consolidated design studios at KU seeks to deploy all aspects of the profession in three distinct interventions: preservation, adaptation and new construction. The Makers' KUbe is conceived as a showcase in timber tectonics, traditional joinery, robotic manufacturing and sustainable materials. The timber bones of the building are exposed by stripping away all applied finishes - elevating structure to expression. A single staircase doubling as convenience stairs above and fire stairs within ties all student spaces together from park to attic. The building serves as a living curriculum, revealing all function, technology and structure as tangible elements for the students to appreciate and critique - learning solidified into built form.” - Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG 📷 Kilograph + BIG The University of Kansas Walter P Moore Cumming Group JE Dunn Construction Smith & Boucher, Inc. As the New European Bauhaus Festival kicks off, we're excited to highlight the Joint Research Center in Sevilla, Spain, which is rooted in the New Bauhaus initiative, connecting the Green Deal to our daily lives and living spaces. The center will become the HQ of the European Commission's international team of 400 scientific researchers and support staff, establishing the vision of the New Bauhaus initiative as a benchmark for collaborative and flexible workspaces that empower co-creation. With its location on the former EXPO´92 site, the building will be directly connected to the ‘Jardin Americano’ riverfront and the Torre Sevilla market, extending the city’s promenade to create a new town square. Inspired by the shaded plazas and streets of the city, the site will be covered with a cloud of solar canopies consisting of photovoltaic sheets, sheltering the plaza, garden, and research center from the southern Spanish sun while mitigating the energy consumption of the new research center.
