With many companies racing to meet net-zero goals, carbon capture is helping them get there. ⚡ 🌿 While there is a plethora of ways power providers can integrate carbon capture, the largest carbon capture plants built in North America have used solvent-based post-combustion capture technology. Robbie Haffner, P.E., Senior Engineer in the Generation Division dives into solvent-based post-combustion capture technology, the successes and failures, and POWER’s outlook on improvements being made across the industry. At #POWER, we’re fortunate to have brilliant subject matter experts who offer unique perspectives on industry trends. Through our new "Say That Again" series, we’re excited to give them a platform to share their insights! In our first post, we’re thrilled to highlight Senior Project Engineer Christopher Ott, E.E's perspective on security and NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards. Chris’s career began in the late 90s as a Power Generation Distribution Specialist in the Marine Corps, focusing on critical target selection and infrastructure protection. After earning a degree in electronic engineering, he designed security systems for major tech companies, the Department of Justice, schools, and healthcare facilities. For the past 14 years, he has specialized in substation security, using 21 years of experience to deliver effective solutions to POWER's clients. On NERC’s broad approach to security standards, Chris says: "NERC’s job is to minimize damage to the grid during a breach. However, since they create standards for all utilities, smaller ones with limited budgets face unique challenges. Larger utilities usually have in-house experts to manage this." He also emphasized the growing concern over evolving physical security threats: "We’re seeing more reports of unmanned aerial vehicles, like drones, as potential threats to the grid. While none have caused damage yet, it’s an area that requires serious attention. Proactive steps today could help us prevent future aerial attacks." Substation security, Chris explains, is more complex than traditional facilities: "Securing substations is like protecting a military base—they’re outdoors, with high voltage and no roof. You need layered security: early detection, perimeter sensors, and protection around critical assets like control houses and transformers." From Chris’s perspective, the return on investment for security is similar to insurance: "Security is like insurance. You hope nothing goes wrong, but you want to be covered if it does. It’s difficult to quantify the ROI on security, but it’s a necessary protection against intentional bad actors who could damage your most critical assets." Finally, Chris stressed the importance of utilities taking a proactive role in identifying their most critical assets: "Utilities need to self-identify their most critical operations—whether it’s infrastructure, architecture, or ratepayer impact. Understanding this enables them to safeguard their key facilities from physical and cyber threats, reducing risks of outages or reputational harm." #Engineering #Security

A lover of trees and mountains at heart, biologist Ethan Norsworthy found himself unexpectedly appreciating an altogether different sort of scenery: the Chihuahuan Desert of southeastern New Mexico. In the latest issue of Currents, Ethan recounts being tasked with conducting special status species surveys and his days intensely scanning the desert for the elusive Scheer’s beehive cactus—a proverbial needle in a haystack.
