In 1970, scientists at Corning Glass Works made a breakthrough by developing single-mode fibers with attenuation of less than 20dB/km, achieved by doping silica glass with titanium. Around the same time, Bell Laboratories, along with a team from the Ioffe Physical Institute, demonstrated the first continuous-wave semiconductor diode laser at room temperature. By 1973, Bell Laboratories introduced a modified chemical vapor deposition process, creating ultra-transparent glass that could be mass-produced into low-loss optical fiber, a method still used today. The first non-experimental fiber-optic link was installed by the Dorset police in 1975, and by 1977, live telephone traffic was successfully transmitted through fiber optics in Long Beach, California.
