We have an update on our PRIMAX PINK WARRIOR FUND THE FUTURE LEGACY GRANT research grant with the American Cancer Society! I am so excited to share this with all of you because you did this too! Check out this exciting news! This proposal seeks to better understand how tumors become therapy resistant. The investigators specifically focus on breast and ovarian cancers that often have mutations in DNA repair machinery. They identified that the gene LC8 plays an important role in resistance for these cancers and propose to functionally characterize the molecular pathways involved. They are using several biochemical techniques to get a picture of the physical interaction between LC8 and critical enzymes, TLK1 and TLK2, that regulate the DNA damage response to determine how these interactions play important roles in therapy resistance. Dr. West has made significant progress in the second year of funding. They have created multiple biological tools to assess the biochemical roles of TLK1 and TLK2 to regulate DNA repair. These tools have enabled them to begin to characterize both independent and compensatory functions of these two enzymes. Many validation experiments have been performed over the past year and this work has led to the submission of a manuscript for publication in a high impact journal.
