Last week, I had the honor of speaking at the California Jail Programs Association Conference on behalf of Prison Yoga Project alongside Bill Brown. I am proud to work with Prison Yoga Project and am grateful to be a part of the effort to bring yoga in incarcerated settings all over the world. Thank you Rafael Luna and Alice Perez for the invitation to speak and share our work with counties from all over California! Trauma Informed Yoga Practices have been proven to recalibrate the nervous system by processing the survival response held in the body. When people experience trauma or ongoing stress, our body reacts with a physiological response to the perceived threat which can become the basis for all of our behavior. When we repeatedly engage a stress response in a safe way, use interoceptive and proprioceptive cues to notice what’s happening in our body, and pair that with a conscious application of a calming practice - our reactions and responses become increasingly prosocial and appropriate to what is happening. If you are interested in learning more about Trauma Informed Yoga and Mindfulness Practices in incarcerated settings, let’s talk!
